Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal agency with a global reputation for excellence. WSDOT is currently seeking to fill two Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 positions on the Olympic Region Region wide Bridge Crew based in Lacey, WA. In these journey-level positions, you will help preserve and maintain more than 650 bridges throughout the Olympic Region, ensuring they remain safe and reliable for the traveling public. Your work will include inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of bridge structures while responding to emergencies, supporting statewide bridge preservation efforts, and working alongside a highly skilled team dedicated to public safety.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, solving complex maintenance challenges, working outdoors in diverse environments, and contributing directly to the safety and resilience of Washington's transportation system.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
- Perform journey-level maintenance, repair, inspection, and preservation activities on floating, movable, and fixed bridge structures throughout the Olympic Region.
- Diagnose deficiencies and repair or replace bridge components using a variety of specialized tools, equipment, and maintenance techniques.
- Perform preventative maintenance including bridge cleaning, deck sealing, painting, expansion joint maintenance, drain cleaning, and structural repairs.
- Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and sketches to complete maintenance and repair activities.
- Operate specialized equipment including under-bridge inspection trucks, aerial lifts, man lifts, small boats, and other bridge maintenance equipment.
- Enter and maintain maintenance records using agency asset management systems.
- Complete daily Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASPs), properly use required PPE, promote safe work practices, and maintain safe work zones for employees and the traveling public.
- Respond to emergency bridge strikes, severe weather events, and other incidents requiring immediate bridge maintenance or traffic control.
- Establish traffic control zones, assist with roadway closures, support incident response activities, and assist highway maintenance crews during snow and ice operations.
- Support the Statewide Bridge Preservation Office by documenting inspection findings and assisting with bridge preservation repairs.
- Perform periodic and post-event bridge inspections following storms, earthquakes, or other significant events.
- Perform other maintenance and operations assignments as needed and serve in the absence of the Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead when requested.

- Safety & Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety standards, construction industry practices, heavy equipment operations applicable to bridge and highway maintenance, structural systems including concrete, steel, and wood, and fall-protection PPE and rigging equipment. Proven ability to work safely at heights and in other high-risk environments.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical and non-technical information to diverse audiences.
- Technical & Digital Proficiency: Proficiency using Windows-based systems, Microsoft Office Suite, cloud-based platforms, virtual meeting tools, and agency databases for reporting, project tracking, and asset management.

The following qualifications are also required:
- Possession of an unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with N endorsement to legally operate vehicles in Washington State, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within six months of hire.
- Ability to obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR certification within six months of hire.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work at elevated heights of at least 100 feet, in confined spaces, in all weather conditions, and respond to emergency callouts as required.
