Reporting the Recreation Supervisor, under general direction, the Bus Driver operates school buses and transport children and Parks, Culture & Recreation staff on field trips for the Summer Day Camp and Playground Pals Programs. These programs are located at North Thurston Elementary Schools (Mt. View, Lydia Hawk, and Pleasant Glade). Bus Drivers are held responsible for route, performance, safe operation of school buses, compliance with traffic laws, and compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, rules and regulations governing pupil transportation and school bus operation.
Bus Drivers work approximately 4-12 hours per week between June 23 - August 15, 2025.
These duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Picks up children and staff and transports to and from various locations as necessary for activities.
- Assists with lunches which includes transporting, lifting and serving.
- Assists Day Camp staff and campers on field trips.
- Performs other duties as assigned by a Lacey Parks Culture & Recreation administrator and/or designee, including the Site Coordinator of the program.
- Performs pre and post trip duties as determined by North Thurston Public School (NTPS) training & management.
- Services, inspects, and cleans equipment as directed by NTPS training & management.
- Legible and accurate completion of forms, records, logs, and reports as required under district and state guidelines.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must currently be employed by North Thurston Public Schools and driving as a NTPS Transportation Specialist.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must pass a thorough background investigation and successfully complete pre-employment medical testing for the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- Must be attentive to job safety considerations and follows all required safety policies, procedures and techniques.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier.
- Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
- Possession of or ability to obtain within the first month a valid first aid certification.
- Must have a Commercial Driver's License. (Per policy, CDL positions are subject to preemployment and random drug testing).
Knowledge of:
- Customer service, and events or activities.
- Knowledge of laws, codes, rules, policies, and regulations relating to public transportation.
Skill In:
- Providing excellent customer service and communicating with diverse audiences.
Ability to:
- Formulate and exercise successful student management procedures resulting in a safe, friendly, and caring atmosphere.
- Remain calm, thoughtful, and deliberate in emergency situations.
- Remain focused on safe school bus operation during distractions from passengers.
