What You’ll Do
This position offers variety, responsibility, and hands‑on experience. As an Assistant Engineer, you won’t be limited to desk work — you’ll spend significant time in the field performing your own construction inspection and seeing projects take shape. Because inspection is a core part of the role, you’ll be comfortable working outdoors year‑round in active construction environments, including around vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, and open trenches.
You’ll also provide professional support to fellow engineers, other City departments, contractors, and residents.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, design, and inspect civil engineering construction projects located primarily within the Public Right of way (streets, storm drains, traffic signals, retaining walls, etc.)
- Review construction plans for compliance with City, State, Federal, and industry standards
- Review engineering calculations and participate in pre‑design, construction, and utility coordination meetings
- Provide construction administration, contract management, and public outreach support
- Represent the City in regional transportation and funding discussions
- Assist with encroachment permits and related inspections
- Participate in Clean Water Program activities and reporting
- Respond to and investigate citizen inquiries and concerns
- Prepare and present staff reports to City Council and Commissions
This is a challenging and rewarding role in a fantastic city — and you’ll be surrounded by smart, dedicated, and genuinely enjoyable colleagues who take pride in their work and who want you to succeed and grow.
