At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You'll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.

A Day in the Life

At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work. We're working a minimum of 4 days a week onsite as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary.

This role is onsite 4 days per week in Lafayette, Colorado.

In this role as a Senior R&D Sensor Mechanical Engineer, you will design and develop patient monitoring consumables for physiologic sensing applications. You will contribute across the full product lifecycle, from concept development and prototyping through design transfer and sustaining engineering.

This role will support technologies across the sensor portfolio, including Nellcor pulse oximetry, INVOS regional oximetry, and BIS depth of anesthesia monitoring solutions.

The position is intended for an engineer who can own complex mechanical and optomechanical design work, guide technical decisions within project teams, and translate early concepts into robust, manufacturable sensor products.

Key Responsibilities:

Mechanical Design, Product Development & Technical Execution

* Lead mechanical product design activities for patient monitoring consumables, including concept development, component design, prototyping, verification/validation builds, and design transfer.

* Own complex design tasks that balance product performance, manufacturability, usability, patient safety, cost, quality, and schedule.

* Develop product specifications, material specifications, assembly drawings, manufacturing documentation, and component/subsystem requirements with traceability to user needs and system requirements.

* Apply engineering analysis methods such as GD&T, tolerance analysis, material characterization, finite element modeling, statistical analysis, and design for manufacturability.

* Design and execute experiments, simulations, and test methods to evaluate sensor adhesion, durability, optical performance, patient interface performance, and component/system interactions.

* Build CAD models, prototypes, fixtures, test units, and engineering builds using Solid Works, lab equipment, and rapid prototyping methods.

* Analyze test data and communicate technical findings, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations to support design decisions.

Cross-Functional Execution & Design Transfer

* Lead technical work streams within product development or sustaining projects, including planning technical tasks, coordinating inputs, and driving closure.

* Partner with R&D, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, systems engineering, clinical, marketing, suppliers, and operations to ensure designs are feasible, manufacturable, and aligned to product needs.

* Support design transfer and sustaining activities, including DFM/DFA, supplier engagement, process development input, manufacturing qualification, released-product investigations, material changes, and cost-reduction opportunities.

* Interpret applicable specifications, standards, regulatory requirements, and quality system expectations as they apply to product design, testing, and documentation.

Minimum Qualifications (Must Have):

* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with 4+ years of relevant engineering experience

OR

* Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with 2+ years of relevant engineering experience

* Experience in an engineering role within the medical device industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience with sensor development, product development, sustaining engineering, or regulated manufacturing experience.

* Demonstrated ability to lead technical work streams, influence design direction, and coordinate cross-functional engineering activities.

* Design engineering and CAD expertise, with Solid Works preferred.

* Experience applying engineering analysis techniques and tools such as MATLAB, Python, Minitab, Excel, Ansys, or equivalent tools.

* Finite element modeling experience.

* Experience with thin films, adhesives, liners, flexible materials, laminates, and related mechanics, including adhesion, durability, and failure modes.

* Experience developing test methods for material properties, reliability, design characterization, verification, or requirement development.

* Experience designing test fixtures, equipment, and data analysis methods to evaluate material, component, or system performance.

* Experience with flexible material manufacturing, converting, assembly processes, or…
