The Lafayette School Corporation is seeking a passionate, innovative, and student-centered educator to join our newly developing Alternative Education Program serving students in grades 6 12. This position offers a unique opportunity to help shape and build a comprehensive alternative learning environment designed to meet the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and transitional needs of students who benefit from nontraditional educational pathways.

The selected candidate will work collaboratively as part of a dedicated team of alternative education teachers focused on creating meaningful educational experiences that support student growth, engagement, and success. Team members will play an active role in designing program structures, establishing instructional practices, developing student supports, and creating a positive learning culture from the ground up. This is an exciting opportunity for educators who are energized by innovation, relationship-building, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on students' lives.

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field
  • Valid Indiana teaching license
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with middle and high school students
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills
Preferred
  • Special education licensure or coursework related to exceptional learners
  • Experience working with students in alternative, intervention, or nontraditional educational settings
  • Knowledge of Indiana Department of Education regulations, Section 504, and IDEA
  • Experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs
  • Familiarity with credit recovery, competency-based learning, flexible instructional models, and personalized learning pathways
  • Experience with Courseware or similar online learning platforms
Performance Responsibilities

Student Instruction and Support
  • Deliver engaging instruction aligned with Indiana Academic Standards in a flexible and student-centered environment.
  • Develop individualized learning experiences that support academic growth and student engagement.
  • Support both students with IEPs and students without identified disabilities.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, and behavior support plans as appropriate.
  • Monitor student progress and utilize data to inform instructional decisions and interventions.
  • Support student goal setting, credit attainment, and graduation pathways.
  • Utilize educational technology, learning management systems, and student data systems to support learning and track progress.
Classroom Environment and Student Relationships
  • Create a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment that fosters student success.
  • Build positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Utilize effective classroom management, de-escalation strategies, and restorative practices.
  • Promote student accountability, engagement, and self-advocacy.
  • Support students in developing social-emotional skills and positive decision-making habits.
Collaboration and Program Development
  • Collaborate with fellow alternative education teachers to design and develop the district's alternative education program.
  • Work closely with special education teachers, counselors, administrators, social workers, and community partners to coordinate student supports.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences.
  • Assist in developing program procedures, intervention systems, and instructional frameworks.
  • Foster strong partnerships with families to support student success.
