Primary Purpose
Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in construction, installation, and repair of wooden structures and fixtures.
Typical DutiesExamines blueprints to determine dimensions of structure, lays out floor‑plan and cabinetwork using rule, framing square, and calipers, selects materials and structural units (lumber, prefabricated doors, cabinets, paneling, wood or plastic), inspects them for code compliance, determines sequence of fabrication and assembly, assigns workers to tasks such as cutting material, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework, and laying flooring, inspects subcontractor work (ductwork, wiring, pipe installations) for conformance, installs doors, builds stairs, lays hardwood floors, may supervise timber structures such as cofferdams, trestles, supports for concrete forms, may make cost estimates for contracts, performs related duties, and may specialize as designated.
RequirementsPhysically capable of exerting 20‑50 pounds of force occasionally, 10‑25 pounds frequently, or >10 pounds constantly, with physical activity beyond Light Work.
Intellectually capable of applying and interpreting principles of rational systems (bookkeeping, engines, electronics, building), solving practical problems, handling variables with limited standardization, possessing basic competencies in algebra, geometry, shop mathematics, reading safety rules, instructions, shop tool maintenance, mechanical drawing and layout work.
Required training: 4‑10 years to learn techniques, information, and facility for average performance.
