Overhead Door Service Technician
This role focuses on the hands-on installation, service, and repair of overhead door systems and electric garage door openers across a variety of customer sites. You travel to customer locations, assess door systems, and ensure every installation and repair meets quality and safety standards. You work closely with experienced technicians, use a wide range of tools, and contribute to projects within a broader security and access control environment.
Responsibilities- Travel to customer sites within the Lafayette and surrounding areas to install, service, and repair overhead door systems and electric garage door openers.
- Assess existing door systems to determine required installation, maintenance, or repair work and communicate findings clearly to customers.
- Set and install overhead doors, ensuring accurate alignment, secure mounting, and smooth operation.
- Calibrate and adjust electric garage door openers to ensure proper functionality, including opening and closing limits and safety features.
- Perform basic wiring to connect door openers, sensors, and motors in accordance with safety standards and company procedures.
- Install, connect, and test sensors, motors, and related components to ensure the entire system operates correctly after installation.
- Verify the correct operation of each door system after installation or repair, and make necessary adjustments to optimize performance.
- Fabricate custom doors or parts as needed using welding, shaping, and fastening tools to meet unique site or customer requirements.
- Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively during installation, service, and repair tasks.
- Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to guide installation and wiring work when required.
- Inspect door systems and components to identify wear, damage, or safety issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Work alongside senior technicians, following instructions and learning best practices for overhead door installation and service.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area in trucks, at the shop, and on customer sites.
- Communicate professionally and courteously with customers, addressing questions and providing basic guidance on system operation.
- Follow all company safety procedures and industry best practices while working on-site and in the shop.
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to work with mechanical systems such as overhead doors and electric openers.
- Experience using hand tools and power tools in a mechanical, electrical, construction, or general labor setting.
- Basic electrical understanding, including simple wiring and connecting systems to sensors and motors.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics at a basic level.
- Comfort working in construction or field-based environments, including customer job sites.
- Strong willingness to learn and follow instructions from senior technicians.
- Professional communication skills for interacting with customers and team members.
- Reliability in showing up to the shop on time and working a full day in the field.
- Openness to entry-level candidates who demonstrate a great attitude and eagerness to develop skills.
- Prior experience as a technician, mechanic, installer, or in a related trade is highly valued and can support higher pay levels.
Skills & Qualifications
- Prior hands-on experience in mechanical, electrical, or construction roles, especially involving installation or service work.
- Experience with overhead doors, garage door openers, or similar mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with inspection practices to identify issues with door systems and components.
- Experience working from blueprints or schematics in construction or technical environments.
- Exposure to welding, shaping, and fastening tools for fabrication of custom parts or doors.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a field crew, riding with and supporting senior technicians.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical issues on-site.
- Interest in long-term skill development and progression from entry-level to higher technician levels.
