Acadiana Legal Service Corporation (ALSC) seeks a detail-oriented Accountant to support financial operations, reporting, and compliance in accordance with LSC guidelines, GAAP, and grant requirements.
NATURE OF WORKWork involves applying accounting principles and established accounting procedures to maintain Acadiana Legal Service Corporation’s accounting records and financial systems in accordance with Legal Services Corporation guidelines, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), grant requirements, and organizational policies.
The incumbent performs intermediate-level professional accounting work involving account reconciliations, preparation of financial reports, budget monitoring, grant accounting support, and maintenance of accurate financial records. Duties include preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, monitoring expenditures, assisting with audit activities, and supporting the organization’s financial reporting processes.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Financial Officer and may include collaboration with other accounting and administrative staff.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIESDuties may include and are not limited to:
- Maintains accounting records and assists with the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger.
- Prepares journal entries and supporting documentation for routine accounting transactions.
- Performs monthly account reconciliations and investigates routine discrepancies.
- Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Monitors organizational and program expenditures and assists with budget tracking.
- Assists with grant accounting activities and ensures expenditures are recorded in accordance with funding requirements.
- Reviews financial transactions for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
- Assists in the preparation of schedules and documentation for annual financial statement audits and grant audits.
- Processes and analyzes accounting data to support financial reporting and management decision-making.
- Assists with cash management activities, including cash reconciliations and reporting.
- Maintains accounting files, records, and supporting documentation in accordance with record retention requirements.
- Identifies and communicates accounting issues or discrepancies to management.
- Assists with the implementation and maintenance of accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Prepares special reports and completes other accounting assignments as requested.
- Performs related work as required.
- Working knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting concepts and financial reporting requirements.
- Basic knowledge of grant accounting and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of budgeting concepts and financial recordkeeping practices.
- Proficiency in accounting software applications and Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate accounting records and reports.
- Ability to analyze financial information and identify discrepancies requiring resolution.
- Ability to perform account reconciliations and maintain supporting documentation.
- Ability to interpret and apply accounting policies and procedures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial information.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, staff, auditors, funding agencies, and vendors.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize work and meet established deadlines.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
- Two (2) to four (4) years of professional accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, governmental, or grant-funded environment.
- Experience with account reconciliations, financial reporting, accounts payable/receivable, or general ledger accounting functions.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Experience in nonprofit accounting and grant-funded programs.
- Experience with Legal Services Corporation grants or other federally funded programs.
- Experience using accounting and financial management software.
- Progress toward Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or other relevant professional certification.
