Job Overview
This job educates women, families, health professionals, and the community about breastfeeding and human lactation. It facilitates the development of policies that protect, promote, and support breastfeeding; serves as an advocate for breastfeeding; and provides evidence‑based breastfeeding support and care from preconception to weaning for women and their families.

EducationRequired – Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Work ExperiencePreferred – Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Required – 2 years of experience in maternal‑child health nursing.
Preferred – 3 years of experience in lactation consulting.
CertificationsRequired – Current registered nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
International Board‑Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)- Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Oversee and coordinate lactating patient needs by providing up‑to‑date and accurate information and appropriate lactation assistance, applying age‑specific knowledge that is relevant to the care of the patient.
- Provide anticipatory guidance to promote best breastfeeding practices and minimize the potential for breastfeeding problems or complications.
- Conduct quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the program and maintain appropriate consult documentation and statistics.
- Evaluate products related to lactation and make recommendations regarding their benefits to patients.
- Provide information for access to breastfeeding equipment and devices appropriate for the lactating mother and breastfeeding infant.
- Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions, and communication style.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Medium work – may involve exerts of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently. The role requires movement of objects and may involve exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue in a patient care area.
Occupational risks include exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous medications or waste. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
