Southeast Fisheries Science Center Job Opportunity

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) is one of six regional National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) centers that support the scientific mission of the NMFS. The SEFSC is composed of several labs, including labs in Miami, FL (SEFSC main office);
Beaufort, NC;
Panama City, FL;
Pascagoula, MS;
Stennis Space Center, MS;
Galveston, TX; and a field office in Lafayette, LA, as well as smaller field offices in North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas that support port sampling and other scientific activities. The SEFSC supports research in the Southeast Region which includes the South Atlantic (North Carolina through Florida), the Gulf of Mexico (Florida through Texas), and the Caribbean (Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands).

Some research and analytical activities may also be conducted in collaboration with other NMFS Science Centers, state agencies, and international countries.

Job Description

a) Laboratory Support:
The Contractor shall participate in research surveys and may be required to collect biological samples at-sea or dockside. Key tasks include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Entering and proofing data
  • Dissecting, weighing, and measuring samples
  • Sectioning and histologically processing samples
  • Mounting samples to microscope slides
  • Creating calibrated digital images of samples for analysis
  • Measuring aspects of sample digital images
  • Assisting with analyzing images and samples
  • Archiving samples
  • Shipping samples
  • Participating in workload and status update meetings

b) Data Analysis:
The Contractor shall be responsible for:

  • Supporting senior scientists/biologists with data entry, database management, data extraction, and analysis and research of biological sample data as required
  • Coordinate or assist in developing reports, presenting results at internal and external meetings, as well as, preparing and publishing abstracts and manuscripts. The Contractor shall follow all SEFSC publication review procedures prior to publication of any abstracts or manuscripts.

c) Resource Surveys:
The Contractor shall participate in NOAA Beaufort Laboratory resource surveys and will be responsible for conducting multiple aspects of survey preparation and completion, from beginning to end.

Survey Coordinator Duties
  • Writing/submitting cruise instructions and cruise reports
  • Ensuring all participant clearance forms are completed and submitted
  • Planning, coordinator and providing logistical support for the surveys
  • Coordinates with IT staff to ensure proper data collection and post-survey retrieval
  • Liaison between ship and lab/participants/TAS program
  • Preparing and loading survey gear, supplies and equipment
  • Coordinating daily vessel activities, personnel, vessel position and movements, ports of call and weather and sea conditions
  • Conducting data collection, biological and/or environmental sampling and logging and processing data and/or samples under field conditions, as require
  • Report to the Branch Chief and Chief Scientist with weekly progress updates or any time there are issues that require alteration to the survey plan
  • Complete incident reporting procedures as necessary in accordance with applicable NOAA Small Boat Program requirements (small boat operations only)
  • Complete small boat log books up on completion of field trips, including tracking vessel activities, personnel aboard and mechanical issues (small boat operations only)
  • Clean and store equipment, log and appropriately store data upon completion of each survey
  • QA/QC data for entry into lab's database
Survey Watch Coordinator
  • Pre survey and post survey inventory of equipment and gear
  • Preparing and loading survey gear, supplies and equipment
  • Coordinate the activities of the Survey Watch Stander and the deployment and retrieval of sampling gears
  • Conducting data collection, biological and/or environmental sampling and logging and processing data and/or samples under field conditions, as required
  • Unload gear/equipment, clean and store equipment, log and appropriately store data upon completion of each survey
Survey Watch Stander
  • Pre survey and post survey inventory of equipment and gear
  • Preparing and loading survey gear, supplies and equipment
  • Conducting data collection, biological and/or environmental sampling and logging and processing data and/or samples under field conditions, as required
  • Unload gear/equipment, clean and store equipment, log and appropriately store data upon completion of each survey
General Duties
  • Survey participation includes replenishing supplies and maintaining equipment and gear in preparation for subsequent surveys.
Requirements

Essential:

  • MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study; or BS Degree in Marine Science or related field of study plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Computer literate and experienced with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.
  • Capable of writing reports at the college level and making oral presentations.
