Help keep Louisiana's roads and bridges safe while building a long-term career in public service. This position offers hands-on work, paid training, and opportunities for career growth within DOTD. At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. Mobile Equipment Operators help keep Louisiana's roads and bridges safe by operating equipment to support maintenance and construction work.
This position offers a 10% base pay increase upon attainment of permanent status (where applicable). No experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression. This is an outdoor, physically active role that may involve varying weather conditions, shift work, night work, overtime, travel, or emergency call-outs depending on assignment.
This position is located in Lafayette Parish, District 03, Unit 720 and reports to the Highway Foreman 2.

Job Duties and Other InformationJob Duties:
- Operates, as needed various types of heavy equipment.
- Makes minor repairs to equipment as needed. Performs preventative maintenance, such as oil changes, etc…
- Performs other duties as directed, such as shoveling asphalt, digging footings for setting concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials and/or equipment, flagging traffic, operating power and/or hand tools, etc.
- Attends required training in accordance with the Department's Structured Training Program
- Obtains/maintains CDL (required for MEO 2 and MEO 1 - Heavy only); reports CDL revocation to appropriate personnel in accordance with the Departments Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Policy (PPM #25).
- May perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as bridge repair, drainage structure repair, installation of guardrail, fencing, fender systems and cabling at moveable bridges and other structures.
- May perform any other tasks as assigned by supervisor or higher-level personnel in order to accomplish the Department's transportation, maintenance and construction mission.
- May train and/or assist in training lower level operators or laborers
- May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
Position-Specific Details: Appointment Type: Probational and Promotional Career Progression: This Position may be filled as a MEO 1, MEO 2, or MEO 1/Heavy Compensation:
- MEO-1 $ 16.06 /hourly - receives Premium Pay of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase granted upon attainment of permanent status.
- MEO-2 $ 17.18/hourly - receives Premium Pay of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase granted upon attainment of permanent status.
- MEO-1/HEAVY $21.05/hourly
