At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving.
Mobile Equipment Operators help keep Louisiana’s roads and bridges safe by operating equipment to support maintenance and construction work. This is an outdoor, physically active role that may involve varying weather conditions, shift work, night work, overtime, travel, or emergency call‑outs depending on assignment. No experience or training is required; training is provided with opportunities for career progression.
This position is located in Lafayette Parish, District 03, Unit 720 and reports to the Highway Foreman 2.

Job Duties- Operate various types of heavy equipment as needed.
- Make minor repairs to equipment, perform preventative maintenance such as oil changes, and other basic upkeep.
- Perform other duties as directed, including shoveling asphalt, digging footings for concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials and equipment, flagging traffic, operating power and hand tools, etc.
- Attend required training in accordance with the Department’s Structured Training Program.
- Obtain and maintain a CDL (required for MEO 2 and MEO 1 – Heavy); report CDL revocation to appropriate personnel in accordance with the Department’s Commercial Driver’s License Policy (PPM #25).
- May perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as bridge repair, drainage structure repair, installation of guardrail, fencing, fender systems, and cabling at movable bridges and other structures.
- May perform any other tasks as assigned by supervisor or higher‑level personnel to accomplish the Department’s transportation, maintenance and construction mission.
- May train and/or assist in training lower level operators or laborers.
- May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency or disaster support activities.
Appointment Type: Probational and Promotional
Career Progression: This position may be filled as a MEO 1, MEO 2, or MEO 1/Heavy.
Compensation:
- MEO‑1 $ 16.06/hr – receives premium pay of $1.00/hr for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase is granted upon attainment of permanent status.
- MEO‑2 $ 17.18/hr – receives premium pay of $1.00/hr for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase is granted upon attainment of permanent status.
- MEO‑1/HEAVY $21.05/hr
