Principal Software Test Automation Engineer

Position Overview

Principal Software Test Automation Engineer – Lead test engineering for medical device software ensuring performance, quality and regulatory compliance. This role supports Medtronic's surgical device systems and will be based in our U.S. location. The application window closes on 30 Jun 2026.

• Develop and perform automated verification & validation test activities for software and systems.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to software and test engineers.
• Orchestrate test team activities, delegate work and review deliverables.
• Leverage and enhance test tools; develop new tools as needed.
• Create project‑specific test strategies and approaches.
• Design, develop, test, maintain, document and validate test components and applications.
• Participate in all phases of product development including requirements review, design, usability, risk assessment, test design and execution.
• Interface with mechanical, electrical, systems, and software engineers.
• Identify and implement process improvements for the SW testing function.
• Participate in defect tracking and analysis.
• Communicate findings, problems and solutions to project teams and stakeholders.
• Maintain excellent working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
• Follow Medtronic’s product development standards and Quality System, and comply with regulatory requirements.
• Perform duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety site rules.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

• B.S./B.A. in Computer Science or related engineering discipline.
• 7+ years of experience in software quality assurance, test automation or test lead roles.
• 5+ years in medical device or regulated industry.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capabilities.
• Ability to handle multiple projects, manage priorities, and accurately estimate tasks.
• Experience with modern iterative software development, agile, and test‑driven development.
• Knowledge of FDA QSR, IEC 62304 compliance.

• Experience with GUI, backend integration, reliability and performance testing and building automation frameworks.
• Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, bash, JavaScript, Perl, etc.) and C/C++ or other languages.
• Linux experience and familiarity with UML.
• Experience designing test automation (Cypress, Jest, Supertest, React testing, RabbitMQ, REST).
• Project management skills: planning, estimation, requirements management.
• Self‑motivated with strong problem‑solving skills.

Competitive salary range: $122,400 – $183,600 (U.S., excluding Puerto Rico). Eligible for a short‑term incentive (Medtronic Incentive Plan).
