Summary/Objective
A podiatry medical assistant is one who specializes in ankle and foot care. Medical assistants keep the medical office running efficiently and take on many tasks. Duties may include ordering, sorting, storing supplies and restocking exam rooms; cleaning exam areas, setting up instruments and equipment and cleaning the sterilizer; greeting patients, answering the office phones, performing data entry and scheduling appointments;
assisting front office staff as needed; and manual insurance verifications. Any other duties determined appropriate by management.

- Prepares patients for examination by taking vitals; recording medical history into Epic
- Escorts patients to and from exam rooms
- Complies with OSHA and HIPAA regulations
- Schedules surgeries by making arrangements with surgical centers; verifies times with patients; prepares charts, pre-admission and consent forms
- Assists the physician with procedures
- Gives patients injections as directed by the physician
- Casting for orthotics
- Applying below-knee cast
- Applying low-dying strapping to feet
- Applying Unna boots
- Performing nail debridement
- Performing callus/corn debridement
- Dressing changes
- Performing X-rays
- Documenting phone calls
- Returning patient messages; completing in-baskets
- Updating logs
High school diploma or equivalent required.
SpecialPosition Requirements
Light travel to other offices may be required for business needs.
PreferencesAt least one (1) year of experience preferred;
Medical Assistant certification is preferred;
Epic experience is preferred.
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must communicate professionally and courteously with patients and clinic staff, sit for extended periods, stand and walk as needed, and assist with rooming patients, filing and other basic office tasks while keeping the office and waiting room clean.
May bend, stoop, and lift 5-10 lbs. The position requires the ability to use a computer and keyboard for long periods.
Regular duties include sitting, standing, bending, reaching and squatting. Frequent computer use and verbal communication with patients and co-workers. Occasional lifting up to 30 lbs. Assist patients in and out of treatment chairs with support from other staff.
Additional Operational DetailsInventory:
Daily deliveries of medical products and supplies from UPS/Fed Ex are unpacked and stored to avoid blocking corridors. Materials such as durable medical equipment may arrive in boxes weighing over 50 pounds and require handling.
Orthotics:
Casting for custom foot orthoses is routine. This includes assembling materials for casting and handling basins of warmed water for plaster application (basins may weigh up to 20 pounds).
X-rays:
Radiographs are a routine part of treatment; assistants aid with foot positioning and handle digital radiograph systems and sensors that weigh around 10 pounds.
Patient Transfer:
Some patients are elderly or incapacitated. Assist with getting patients into/out of chairs and sometimes sit on the floor to remove shoes/socks or perform nail debridements as needed.
Casting:
Post-surgical and fracture care may involve casting and bandage application. Assistants help hold limbs and pass materials during casts.
Instrument Processing:
Ensure instruments are cleaned, sterilized and properly prepared for each patient. Sterilization may occur multiple times daily.
Procedures:
Assist with podiatric procedures such as removing toenails, foreign bodies, warts, and wound debridement, and help with sterile trays and instrumentation as needed.
Medications:
Retrieve and deliver medications to treatment rooms as required, stored in lockable cabinets. Exercise caution to ensure accurate dosing and prevent adverse events.
Record Keeping:
Bring patients to treatment rooms, record vitals and medical history, and enter information into the electronic chart. Accurate documentation of chief complaints, histories, medications and vitals is required.
