This job ensures spiritual care for assigned units and on an as needed basis throughout the facility. The incumbent provides spiritual care to patients, families, staff, and visitors. The position offers support at the time of death and assists in decisions near the end of life.

EducationRequired - Master’s in Divinity or equivalency (as determined by board certifying entity)
Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education from Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) or The Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT)
Work ExperienceRequired - 1 year of experience providing interfaith and culturally competent Spiritual Care in the Healthcare field
CertificationsPreferred - Board certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC)
National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)
National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains (NAVAC)
Spiritual Care Association (SCA)
Ordination, Commission, or Ecclesiastical Endorsement (as determined by board certifying entity)
KnowledgeSkills and Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge of different philosophical systems and religions and ability to be conversant in ethical dialogue.
- Working knowledge of psychological and sociological disciplines.
- Ability to provide spiritual care and support to a diverse population.
- Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of information.
- Proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals
- Provides presence, comfort, and spiritual support to patients, families, visitors, and staff during emergent calls, including crisis and death, as well as routinely on assigned units and as needed.
- Facilitates decedent care administrative responsibilities with families and staff following patient deaths as required by location.
- Coordinates and leads interfaith rituals and services as requested by hospital leadership.
- Maintains collegial ministry relationships, including the interdisciplinary team and spiritual care team.
- Provides mentorship to new spiritual care staff and/or CPE students.
- Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
