Chaplain for Holy Comforter Episcopal School
We believe each child is a unique creation of God and it is our role to nourish the spirit, challenge the mind and strengthen the body of each student so they are inspired to be the difference in our world. This role offers a unique opportunity to minister to people of many ages, faiths, and backgrounds in a school community grounded in the values and traditions of the Episcopal Church.
The Chaplain will develop and lead school worship, provide pastoral care, develop and teach religious studies classes, and lead service learning and community service initiatives. S/he is the spiritual cornerstone of the community, working collaboratively with faculty to support students’ intellectual, spiritual, and social‑emotional growth. The Chaplain serves as an employee of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church (HCEC), with primary responsibility for its ministry to Holy Comforter Episcopal School (HCES).
An ideal candidate will possess the following strengths:

- Change Management – lead the church through significant and necessary periods of change.
- Teaching/Training – deepen understanding and equip members with new skills.
- Administration – manage the church operations including facilities, finances and mediation.
- Negotiate/Resolve Conflict – help deal with conflict through training, negotiation and mediation.
- Community Catalyst – function on a larger stage beyond the church and rally a variety of individuals and groups to address critical issues.
Job Description: St. Mark's is a small friendly family style church with approximately 70 members in downtown Starke on Church Street. Their church was built sometime in the 1880’s and is a lovely gothic Carpenter style church. Their mission is “To know Christ, to let Christ be known.”
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church seeks a part-time Rector (approximately 20 hours per week) who:
- Would lead with integrity and provide spiritual guidance and pastoral care
- Will compose and deliver dynamic sermons
- Help members discern their ministry gifts
- Will supervise and direct staff and possess both planning and managerial skills
- Will fellowship with our various groups and activities
- Enable us to grow and develop strong community bonds
- Encourage and enable outreach
- Help us to continually live into our Mission to know Christ and to let Christ be known
The ideal candidate to minister to our parish will possess the following strengths:
- Passion, energy, and sincerity for preaching and celebrating in the traditional forms of the Book of Common Prayer.
- Strategic vision and direction to equip our committees, ministries, and lay leaders to multiply our impact in the community.
- Empathy to support pastoral care and general support to parishioners of all ages.
- A steadfast commitment to truth, authenticity, and moral consistency through your faithful adherence to the teachings of the Episcopal Church.
- Administrative and personnel skills required to run a church.
- Will provide spiritual leadership and pastoral care within a rural, family-focused parish
- Is comfortable guiding a small congregation and engaging the wider community
- Preaches thoughtfully with an extemporaneous style and a welcoming sense of humor
- Is flexible in worship leadership and appreciative of diverse liturgical music
- Will nurture and expand existing outreach ministries
- Encourages fellowship and Christian formation
- Has a vision for growth, particularly among families and young people
- Is willing to serve several years or longer
