Your specific responsibilities:

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but is not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.

Other job-related requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Class "B" CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with air brakes at the time of hire.
  • To be in compliance with the District Two Loss Prevention Procedure and be aware of reducing personal injury and vehicular accidents.
  • While on-duty status, the position incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Obtain Certification in Maintenance of Traffic – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.
  • This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.

Minimum qualifications:

  • One year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment and possess a valid Class "B" CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with air brakes at the time of hire.
  • This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy.
