Job SummaryThe Clayton State University Police Officer reports to an assigned supervisor and performs shift work, including nights, weekends, overtime, rotating shifts, and holidays. The role protects life and property on campus through patrolling, traffic enforcement, emergency response, investigations, and support of campus security. Officers exercise independent judgment and initiative to address emergencies and maintain law and order.
Responsibilities- Conduct routine patrols on foot and by vehicle to detect and deter criminal activity, safety hazards, and policy violations.
- Operate a motor vehicle during day and night in emergency situations with speeds exceeding posted limits and in adverse traffic conditions.
- Respond promptly to non‑emergency and emergency calls, coordinate with emergency services, and take appropriate action to ensure safety.
- Enforce campus policies, regulations, and applicable laws by issuing warnings, citations, or making arrests when necessary.
- Exercise independent judgment regarding reasonable suspicion, probable cause, search, arrest, and use of force.
- Conduct investigations of incidents, crimes, or complaints, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and collaborate with other agencies.
- Perform rescue functions, direct traffic, administer emergency medical aid, lift, drag, and evacuate individuals during accidents or disasters.
- Build positive relationships with the community through outreach, educational programs, and safety initiatives.
- Maintain accurate reports of daily activities, incidents, arrests, and other relevant information using forms, reports, and databases.
- Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and certification courses to enhance knowledge and readiness.
- Comply with Campus Security Authority responsibilities under the Clery Act.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 21 years of age
- Citizen of the United States
- Valid Georgia driver’s license
- No felony or other disqualifying convictions
- Georgia POST Basic Law Enforcement Certification or ability to obtain it within one year of employment
- Current Georgia POST Council Basic Law Enforcement certificate in good standing.
- Advanced or specialized Georgia POST Council training certificates.
- Knowledge of standard police practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of Georgia criminal and traffic laws.
- Knowledge of university properties, population, and traffic control issues.
- Knowledge of fire prevention techniques.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively.
- Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
- Ability to obtain information through interview, interrogation, and observation.
- Ability to understand and execute complex instructions.
- Ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written form and prepare comprehensive reports.
- Ability to develop and maintain good public relations.
- Ability to meet specific requirements established by competent authority.
- Skill in first aid and comfort in accident, illness, and death situations.
