The Jones Center at Ichauway invites applications for the temporary position of Wildlife Ecology Seasonal Technician II. We will hire 1-2 position(s) to start in May and end in August. There is potential for these positions to be extended up to 6 months. On-site housing is provided on an as-available basis (no pets).

Job Description

This position will support the work of an active Wildlife Ecology research lab. Our research primarily focuses on small mammal ecology, predator-prey interactions, and the effects of management practices on wildlife communities.

Location

The Jones Center is located on Ichauway, a 30,000-acre property in southwestern Georgia between Albany and Bainbridge. The Center’s research, education, and conservation programs focus on ecology and natural resource management. Ichauway contains 18,000 acres of longleaf pine woodlands, 1,000 acres of wetlands, and 25 miles of stream and river ecosystems. An 18,000 square foot research laboratory houses scientists’ laboratories, a central analytical laboratory, and two field labs.

Duties
  • Trail camera surveys (including setting and checking cameras and processing trail camera images)
  • Live trapping and handling mice, rats, and flying squirrels
  • Maintaining electric fences
  • Predator trapping using foothold and cage traps
  • Track surveys
  • Small mammal diet/foraging experiments
  • Avian surveys using autonomous recording units
  • Data entry
  • Other duties as needed
  • Field work may occur in unpleasant weather conditions and at times will be physically strenuous
  • Early morning, evening, and weekend work may occasionally be required
Compensation

$15/hour with on-site housing provided, or $17/hour without on-site housing. No benefits package is available. The majority of our on-site housing is newly constructed. All housing comes equipped with basic kitchen supplies and are fully furnished. Everyone with housing has a private bedroom and bathroom with shared common spaces.

Qualifications
  • Applicants should have a background in wildlife biology, ecology, or related field.
  • An associate or bachelor’s degree is preferred, as is prior field experience.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Applicants must be able to work individually and as a part of a team, follow instructions, neatly and accurately record data, and read small print on ear tags.
  • Applicants must be able to carry loads up to 50 lbs and climb over fences.
  • Applicants must be in good physical condition and able to work in hot, humid, and buggy conditions. The position is heavily field based with much time spent outdoors collecting field data. Venomous snakes and poison ivy are common throughout our research areas.
  • Experience handling and identifying southeastern small mammals is preferred but not required.
  • Experience driving trucks on unimproved roads is preferred.
  • Experience using MS Office programs such as Excel is preferred.
