Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced mechanical engineer with optomechanical experience design and develop robust mechanical systems for a novel ophthalmic medical device. The role is responsible for the mechanical architecture of the product, and its detailed design, development, and optimization.

As the engineer in this role, you will need to have intimate knowledge of various aspects of electrical engineering. You will be at the forefront acting as the primary authority over the electrical system architecture, electronics design and production, and system integration of the product. We are at an early stage of prototyping - this is a role for someone who wants to make a real difference developing the world’s best ophthalmic platform.

You need to be a self-starter, comfortable with a fast-paced workplace, able to manage external contractors, able to achieve goals within a high-level of ambiguity, work across functional lines, and take a hands-on approach to explore and find optimal solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and take ownership of the electrical architecture of the complex electo-opto-mechanical product.
  • Lead and own the system-level architecture ensuring cohesive operation of hardware, firmware, and software components.
  • Own the development, integration, and testing of prototypes. Manage prototype configuration.
  • Develop and optimize embedded solutions for motion control, microcontrollers, LED control, and other modules.
  • Develop requirements and test procedures for components, sub-system, and system-level.
  • Develop and work with consultants and contractors to develop the wide spectrum of PCBAs needed for our product.
  • Create PCBA files and cable drawings. Work with suppliers to build and test PCBAs and cable assemblies.
  • Test PCBAs to ensure functionality. Rework and redesign as needed.
  • Manage requirement traceability and implementations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure cohesive system design and contribute to architecture discussions.
  • Contribute substantially to design transfer to manufacturing.
  • Other duties tasks and duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely-related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering and embedded firmware development.
  • 4+ years of medical device system-level experience.
  • Experience with the IEC 60601-1 standard and testing.
  • Experience with system architecture design.
  • Strong experience building and testing prototypes.
  • Experience with C/C++ programming languages in an embedded software context.
  • Experience with design transfer to manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in handling peripherals such as UART, SPI, CAN, I2C, GPIO, and USB.
  • Strong background in developing and debugging PCBAs and firmware on target. Experience reworking PCBAs.
  • Excellent knowledge of reading schematics and data sheets of components.
  • Experience in most of the following fields: high-speed mixed signal systems, motion control, communication protocols, and embedded software / firmware.
  • Experience with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal analyzers.
  • Desirable:
    Knowledge of automated testing and scripting using Python or similar languages is a plus.
  • Desirable: experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), including kernel modules and device drivers, and low-level hardware interfacing.
