TITLE

Special Education Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Meet the licensure and certification requirements of the Delaware Department of Education for Special Education Teacher K-12.
  • Minimum 3 years of satisfactory experience teaching in a special education setting.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Teacher leadership experience preferred.

JOB GOAL

Within the context of the school community, provide leadership, support, and expertise in the development of special education services as required by federal, state, local policies/regulations.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains all special education records ensuring accuracy and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Schedules and conducts all special education related meetings.
  • Directs the implementation of new and existing services ensuring that services are provided within established time frames.
  • Monitors administrative process for the purpose of preparing reports.
  • Collaborates with others for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assists in preparing schedules for special needs students and checks schedules for IEP coordination.
  • Supports special education teachers, special education paraprofessionals, and other specialists directly involved with providing services to students.
  • Works with building administration and staff through collaborative teams to develop appropriate programs to meet student needs.
  • Assists the discipline professionals and building administration in disciplinary issues involving special education students and running Manifestation Determination Review meetings.
  • Addresses staff concerns, policy conflicts, community issues, and parental requests by identifying relevant issues and recommending or implementing effective solutions.
  • Assists in transferring special needs students to ensure required paperwork is transferred and reviews special education IEPs for newly enrolled students to determine appropriate placement and programs.
  • Assists in interviewing and selecting teachers and other personnel for the special education department.
  • Monitors and assists teachers and other program personnel in the adoption and evaluation of instructional materials and programs.
  • Attends local and state, special education meetings to keep abreast of current regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes data for the purpose of developing and implementing strategies and programs that meet the needs for students.
  • Serves as a professional developer to increase teacher effectiveness.
  • Facilitates communication and working relationships with parents, outside agencies, and community resources.
  • Oversees all transition processes including student placements in more restrictive settings and out-of-district facilities.
  • Assists the District Supervisor of Special Programs in all matters related to programs and personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned by the direct supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and contract length to be established by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and Department of Education regulations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Satisfactory criminal background check prior to being placed on payroll.
  • Satisfactory child protection registry check.
  • Mandatory direct deposit of pay.
  • Documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.

All applicants are required to submit three (3) letters of reference, with one from an immediate supervisor that is dated within the past year.
