Position: Nurse Clinician PNE-Palliative Care Casual Days

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $34.50 - $55.20 per hour. Placement within the range is based on relevant experience and internal equity considerations.

Job Overview

Casual position for Palliative Care at Lake Forest Hospital Cancer Center, one consistent day per week from 8:00am-4:30pm, with flexible day selection. The role requires compliance with the organization’s Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program and applicable policies and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment:
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
    • Report deficiencies to supervisor immediately.
    • Assist in rectifying deficiencies as requested.
    • Assume responsibility for and supervise the appropriate care of medical equipment.
  • Provide pre-attending care for patients:
    • Perform comprehensive assessment of chief complaints and patient needs using the nursing process.
    • Seek solutions and offer opinions to physicians and other health care providers.
    • Document all nursing assessments in the patient’s medical record clearly, completely, and legibly.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
    • Upright protocols for release of patient/medical information.
  • Perform routine nursing duties and demonstrate clinical competency:
    • Independently perform routine duties including phlebotomy, medication administration, vital sign measurement, preparation of lab specimens, etc.
    • Demonstrate competency in complex specialty‑related procedures such as conscious sedation, chemotherapy administration, inseminations, implantable pain pump adjustments, and wound excision.
  • Interpret test abnormalities and take appropriate remedial action:
    • Document all interventions in the patient medical record as appropriate.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other departments:
    • Coordinate appropriate patient care with clinical and administrative departments.
    • Communicate with outside agencies or facilities as appropriate.
  • Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls:
    • Use clinical assessment skills and service standards to triage and prioritize calls.
    • Document assessments in the patient’s medical record clearly, completely, and legibly.
  • Manage urgent/emergent medical situations and cardiac arrests:
    • Obtain and operate emergency equipment according to relevant standards.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and physicians for daily problem solving and decision‑making:
    • Maintain alertness to patient care needs and proactively address issues.
    • Delegate appropriate tasks to Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants in accordance with Illinois law and organizational protocols.
  • Comply with all existing patient‑care policies and procedures:
    • Recommend new policies to improve the patient experience.
    • Ensure implementation of new policies in a timely manner.
  • Initiate and coordinate patient education:
    • Ensure patients understand educational materials and, when appropriate, demonstrate returned procedures.
    • Provide teaching to staff formally and informally.
    • Participate in community outreach education, patient support groups, or specialty educational programs as requested.
Qualifications
  • Required:
    • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
    • Registered Professional Nurse licensure in the State of Illinois.
    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
    • Current experience within past five years or new nursing graduate within past two years. If less than six months experience, approval required from NMG Director of Professional Development.
  • Preferred:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (may be required for some oncology roles).
    • 1–2 years’ experience in ambulatory or acute care.
