Summary
An employee in this class is responsible for servicing utility customer accounts, the drive‑up window, and answering multi‑line phones. A comprehensive knowledge of cashiering principles and the ability to make accurate math computations are required. The employee will open and close customer accounts, process any changes, handle customer questions and problems including researching and adjusting accounts, and perform various clerical and customer relations tasks.
EssentialJob Duties
This is a clerical position requiring teamwork. Daily responsibilities include:
- Assisting customers with their accounts
- Maintaining records of customer accounts
- Balancing cash and check receipts
- Processing meter readings and forwarding work orders to field staff
- Processing monthly billing of customer accounts
- Reporting to the Utility Office Manager
- Receiving payments from customers, including processing, batching, and keying those received by mail and night drop
- Processing financing payments for water/sewer assessments
- Processing bank deposits and performing the bank run
- Running delinquency reports and processing notices
- Running turn‑off reports, processing and ordering turn‑offs, and handling all return checks
- Maintaining return‑check reports and processing “cash only” accounts
- Processing account refunds, loading/unloading meter box reports, printing and dispatching work orders
- Updating work orders on customer accounts and reviewing & editing accounts monthly
- Printing and sorting bills for mailing, manually processing temporary service and monthly billing
- Processing annexed accounts and maintaining the meter inventory
- Filing and maintaining customer cards and work orders and other related duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of cashiering principles and accurate arithmetical computations
- Courteous customer interface and ability to handle irate customers
- Detail‑oriented and multi‑task oriented
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions
- Rapid learning of assigned tasks and adherence to prescribed routines
- Proficiency in reading, speaking and writing English
Basic knowledge of standard office equipment, operation of a computer, adding machine, and multi‑line phone system, with a willingness to learn other equipment as necessary.
Education, Training and ExperienceHigh school diploma, GED or equivalent required. Experience handling large sums of money and dealing with the public is required. Bilingual (Spanish speaking) preferred.
Physical DemandsAcceptable hearing and vision with or without correction. Must be able to view a computer screen, stand and/or sit for extended periods, reach, bend and stoop to access file cabinets. Personal Leave Time (PLT)Accrues weekly from hire date, rate depends on length of service. PLT may be used, paid, after six (6) months.
