Position: Air Conditioning Mechanic I

Overview

Under general supervision, the Air Conditioning Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing HVAC and refrigeration equipment, monitoring the Energy Management System, and ensuring the comfort level of campus buildings. This role may require weekend work, coverage during college closings, and immediate response during equipment failures or outages.

Responsibilities
  • Provides prompt and courteous service to service requests; answer, screen, research, inform, advise, record, process and follow up on customer requests efficiently.
  • Provides progress updates on work being performed.
  • Analyzes mechanical equipment database for life expectancy planning.
  • Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots refrigeration, air conditioning/heating and ventilation systems.
  • Services and maintains refrigeration equipment, heating, and air conditioning systems by determining malfunction and replacing or repairing defective parts.
  • Monitors the chilled water treatment and energy management systems.
  • Ensures the proper and efficient operation of all related equipment.
  • Coordinates operation and maintenance of automated energy management controls.
  • Develops energy utilization program, collects and analyzes data to establish long‑range goals.
  • Provides technical assistance to department, campus, or other functions.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs machinery, equipment, physical structure, pipe and electric system for department, campus or college.
  • Changes filter in air handlers; performs plumbing and electrical repairs on heating and air conditioning or other mechanical systems as required.
  • Performs regularly scheduled maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  • Monitors current inventory of supplies and equipment and notifies appropriate parties if inventory runs low.
  • Prepares required reports for various internal and external requests.
  • Responsible for compliance with State, Federal, and local safety regulations including OSHA, EPA, and NFPA.
  • Follows established safety practices.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience (Required)
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 4+ years of related work experience in maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC and/or refrigeration equipment.
Knowledge (Required)
  • HVAC and refrigeration service and installation techniques.
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of heating and air conditioning equipment.
Skills (Required)
  • Problem/situation analysis.
  • Customer Service.
  • Verbal and written communication.
  • Attention to detail.
Abilities (Required)
  • Work with diverse populations and varying education levels.
Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or

Special Requirements
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • EPA Universal Refrigeration certificate.
Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience (Preferred)
  • 6+ years of related work experience in maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC and/or refrigeration equipment.
  • Commercial industrial air conditioning systems experience.
Knowledge (Preferred)
  • Microsoft Office Professional or similar applications.
Skills (Preferred)
  • Data Analysis / Analytics.
Abilities (Preferred)
  • Multitasking capabilities.
  • Prioritize assignments/workload/time management.
Work Environment & Physical Demand
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, install or remove objects weighing 20 to 49 pounds.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, install or remove objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
