This is a position with the Prototype and Manufacturing Division (PMD) machine shop at NAVAIR Lakehurst. The Prototype and Manufacturing Division provides critical hardware to the fleet. We overhaul arresting engines and launch valves and are the sole source of supply for the cables used for aircraft arrestment (i.e., purchase cables and cross deck pendants), we manufacture hardware in response to fleet emergencies, and we manufacture a wide range of support equipment and test this equipment appropriately.

We are the sole source of supply and last source of supply for critical hardware that is essential to Navy Fleet operations.

PMD produces a large range of machined components from small components approximately one inch in size to large frames and equipment bases that are over 30 feet long. This position involves the operation of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and various electric and pneumatic hand tools, and requires the judgment and experience to handle the shop's most complex and critical work with minimal oversight.

Senior Machinist (Machinist V) independently sets up and operates a full range of manual and CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments, including first-article and low-tolerance/high-criticality components. This position uses manual and CNC machine tools (e.g., jig borer, grinding machine, engine lathe, milling machine) to machine metal for both products and items for use as jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds.

Work typical involves independently planning and performing the most difficult machining operations, which require complex setups, non-standard approaches, and a very high degree of accuracy on critical fleet hardware. This includes setting up machine tools (e.g., installing cutting tools and adjusting guides, stops, working tables, and other controls to handle the size of stock to be machined; determining proper feeds, speeds, tooling, and operation sequence, or developing sequences not fully prescribed in drawings, blueprints, or layouts);

using a full range of precision measuring instruments; and troubleshooting setup, tooling, or programming issues without direct supervision.
