The non‑exempt job classification is covered under the McNamara‑O'Hara Service Contract Act (SCA). Service employees are compensated per the prevailing wage rates and fringe benefits set by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Wage and Hour Division's WDs 29 CFR Part 541 and 29 CFR 4.163(f).
Job SummaryThe Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench‑digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools; operates and inspects machines to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists, hand tools, micrometers, and gauges; replaces defective engines and subassemblies and tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency;
welds broken parts and structural members; may direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assistance with assembly/disassembly; may repair, adjust, and maintain mining machinery such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling, cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.
- Manage maintenance activities and/or equipment operation at the local places of performance.
- Develop maintenance procedures; ensure implementation; allocate workload; supervise contractor employees; monitor equipment status.
- Monitor and manage relationships with the customer.
- Keep maintenance logs and report on daily activities.
- Ensure health and safety policies adherence.
- Perform tasks as assigned per the Management and Contract Compliance Plan, and workload requirements.
- May be required to attend the Government provided Section 608/609 certification training.
- Must be available during operating hours; may be required to be available up to 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, during key events.
- Subject to mandatory drug testing as required.
- Handle equipment/supplies weighing up to 50 pounds individually and occasionally items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.
- Exert moderate physical effort in loading, unloading, and arranging equipment/supplies as applicable to the position.
- Work inside and/or outside in dirty, dusty environments; occasionally exposed to hot, cold, damp, and drafty weather conditions.
- Work on hard or uneven surfaces.
- Two years' experience inspecting and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic components on a wide variety of heavy‑duty military vehicles using computerized diagnostic equipment, and repairing, cleaning, or replacing defective parts of components and systems.
- Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Skilled in planning, controlling, executing, multitasking and being responsible for the successful completion of work requirements.
- Ability to read and write in English, comprehend written instructions, perform common mathematical tasks, and communicate effectively.
- Certificate from a Vocational Technical School for vehicle or equipment mechanic, or graduation from Vehicle, Equipment, or Power Generation Mechanic Advanced Individual Training (AIT) such as 91‑Series MOS, or other DOD equivalent training.
- Valid U.S. State‑issued Class A CDL; U.S. Citizen.
- Possess or be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance applicable to the position and/or a military Common Access Card (CAC) within 30 days if required.
- Complete contractual and company‑mandated trainings applicable to the position.
- Minimum education:
high school diploma or GED.
- Prior military experience.
