Graduate Assistant
- Provost (Standard) are student workers who contribute to the mission of Southern university while pursuing their graduate studies. This position will assist the department faculty or supervisors with administrative or project-related tasks, as assigned. GA positions are established on a term-to-term basis and are not guaranteed for the entire academic year.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION for Graduate Assistant
- Provost (Standard)
The Graduate Assistant in the Office of the Provost provides administrative and project support to the Provost and Executive Liaison in advancing the academic mission of the University. Working approximately 20 hours per week, the assistant helps maintain the daily operations of the office. Not limited to: preparing correspondence, meeting materials, scheduling and coordinating meetings with deans, department chairs, and faculty;
maintaining accurate records; and working the receptionist desk as needed.
A significant portion of the role involves research and data support. The assistant compiles information for accreditation, assessment, and program review efforts; assists with tracking faculty credentialing, course inventories, and enrollment data; and prepares summaries and draft reports that inform academic decision-making. The assistant also supports special projects and events sponsored by the Provost's Office, such as faculty development sessions, opening-year meetings, and university-wide academic initiatives.
Preferred qualifications include strong writing and organizational skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office and university systems, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines with minimal supervision.
BENEFIT
- Tuition = 75% off for 6-9 credit hours per semester
- Maximum work hours per week = 20 hours
- Available for fall, spring and summer terms
- Housing is not included (Purchase separately, based upon availability and current rate)
- Stipend = $2,000 for fall, spring and summer terms
- Non-exempt position:
Must clock in/out each day to track hours worked. - General and tech fees - covered at 100% (fees waived)
- 5 meals per week (when available/cafeteria open); meal plan is not available during summer and on some holidays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- May include, but is not limited to the following:
- Departmental Support – Assist in departmental-specific administrative and project-related duties, as assigned by the supervisor.
- Student Culture – Serve as a role model, exemplifying Southern University’s values and standards for student conduct.
- Administrative Assistance – Perform various administrative tasks, which may include scheduling, managing correspondence, maintaining files, and ensuring efficient department operations.
- Special Projects – Contribute to special projects or initiatives as assigned by the supervisor or department leadership.
ADDITIONAL/NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Availability to work up to 20 hours per week , with flexibility around academic commitments. Familiarity with platforms such as Microsoft Office, Google Suite, JICS, MyFire, statistical software, and/or learning management systems, specific to the position.
All remaining duties are considered "nonessential" within the context of the ADA, which means that the function could be reassigned to another employee in order to allow a disabled individual to hold the position. Alternatively, the manager could try to provide a reasonable accommodation so that the disabled individual could perform the function.
