The Success Coach enhances students’ success through academic success coaching, goal achievement and monitoring, study skills development, psychometric assessments, appreciative advising techniques, and a variety of college resources. The Success Coach is the key point of contact for at-risk students referred to through the STARS Early Alert Program and empowers them to identify and analyze academic concerns while developing proactive solutions and written student action plans.

The Coach collaborates closely with referring constituents to ensure effective communication of concerns, problem resolution, and case closure. Utilizing predictive analytics, the Success Coach provides intrusive counsel to students individually and in groups to motivate them to be independent, self-regulated, and confident learners. The Success Coach also assists in the development and implementation of programs and services designed to promote the Academic Success Center and the engagement and retention of first-time-in-college students, including web based and social media marketing.

Student success, retention, and timely completion of educational goals are the primary objectives of the Success Coach.

Essential Functions/Duties:

  • Provides success coaching for students to help them adjust to college life, identify barriers, and develop solutions to ensure retention and successful completion of educational goals.
  • Provide a trusting environment where students can share their thoughts, aspirations, concerns, and interests.
  • Connects students to campus and community resources and monitor follow through.
  • Provides psychometric testing and results counseling for students.
  • Monitors the STARS Early Alert System daily and provides expedient support and responses to associated faculty, staff, and students.
  • Employs predictive analytic data to contact and counsel at-risk students individually and in groups to proactively promote retention.
  • Collaborates closely with the Academic Success Coaching Team to ensure College wide consistency and value of programs.
  • Conducts workshops on success topics like study skills, financial literacy, time management, test taking skills, etc.
  • Communicates daily with students through face-to-face meetings, phone, email, and social media.
  • Facilitates referrals for students with disabilities and promotes the use reasonable accommodations afforded them.
  • Keep abreast of national, state, and local statutes related to students with disabilities.
  • Promotes and support activities, policies, and procedures which enhance academic success and retention throughout the College community.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed electronic records related to all student contact, coaching sessions, psychometric testing, etc.
  • Works collaboratively with other college departments to facilitate student success and utilization of STARS and the Academic Success Center.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Dean of Student Services.

Exceptional coaching and mentoring skills with knowledge of current techniques, theories, and trends in educational coaching and counseling.

Knowledge of best practices in student retention and commitment to student development and success.

Creative problem-solving capabilities.

Ability to drive results and meet team/department goals.

Must have a high level of interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work independently as well as function as part of a team is critical.

Able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.

Knowledge of learning disabilities and the provision of reasonable accommodation.

Knowledge of various pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, and discussion.

Ability to respond to and work effectively and respectfully with students, faculty and staff from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Must be able to efficiently operate personal computer and word-processing and spreadsheet software.

Excellent record keeping and strong ability to follow through on tasks essential.
