Youth Build Lakeland is a full-time six-month program in which young adults who are 18-24 years of age work to improve their lives in a variety of ways. While in the program, participants receive classroom instruction in an effort to prepare for the GED exam.

Responsibilities:

Youth Build Lakeland is a full-time six-month program in which young adults who are 18-24 years of age work to improve their lives in a variety of ways. While in the program, participants receive classroom instruction in an effort to prepare for the GED exam. There is also a strong emphasis placed on personal development, job placement, leadership development, and community service.

The teacher will report to the Youth Build Senior Program Manager.

Develop and adapt curriculum to the needs of the program and participants, assess academic progress by reviewing and updating plans regularly develop learning contracts and individualized lesson plans for each participant, participate in special projects as required, and work together with other Youth Build staff and modify curriculum and materials as needed. Serve as a mentor to participants, help participants prepare for post-secondary education and assist with graduate support.

Responsible for teaching basic academic skills to prepare participants for the GED exam. In addition, job duties will also consist of assessing academic progress by reviewing updating records and participants data regularly in DOL MIS system. Test participants (TAB test) at three

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Psychology, or related field preferred
  • Two years’ experience working with children in an educational setting
  • Must possess or can obtain a valid first aid/CPR card
  • Must possess a strong commitment to helping young people succeed in an innovative training program to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and enable them to make a difference in their community.
  • Ability to establish rapport and relate sensitively to a multi-racial and multi-cultural group of young people. Understanding of the issues facing young people in the community where the program is located and a willingness to learn from young people.
  • Effective interpersonal and problem-solving skills and the ability to relate to a wide range of issues, people and institutions.
  • Knowledge of human service, health, court and criminal justice systems’ programs, regulations, procedures and alternative programs.
