The Roberts Academy instructor fosters a structured, supportive, and engaging learning environment designed to meet the needs of students in grades 1–8 with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. The instructor delivers explicit, evidence-based, multisensory instruction in reading, writing, and related skill areas; differentiates instruction to support individual learning profiles; and monitors student progress to inform instruction. The instructor builds strong, respectful relationships with students, promoting confidence, self-advocacy, and a growth mindset.
They collaborate closely with colleagues, specialists, and families to support each child’s academic and social-emotional development, while maintaining clear and consistent communication with all stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSDeliver daily, structured, and engaging instruction to students in assigned grade levels (1–8), aligned with the Academy’s mission and instructional model.Design and implement weekly, developmentally appropriate lesson plans that incorporate explicit, systematic, and multisensory instruction tailored to students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.Provide instruction in reading and language arts using the Orton-Gillingham approach, and apply multisensory, evidence-based strategies across content areas, including mathematics, science, and social studies.Differentiate instruction to meet individual student learning profiles and support academic growth, confidence, and independence.Monitor and assess student progress regularly; maintain accurate, timely documentation; and use data to inform instructional decisions.Establish and maintain positive, productive relationships with students, fostering a supportive classroom environment that promotes engagement and self-advocacy.Communicate consistently and effectively with parents/guardians through conferences, written reports, and ongoing updates regarding student progress and needs.Collaborate with Roberts Academy, School of Education, and FSC faculty and staff to support student success and contribute to a cohesive, team-based approach to instruction.Successfully complete first level of Orton-Gillingham certification within the first 18 months of employment and continue progressing through advanced levels in accordance with Academy expectations.Participate in ongoing professional development, including Orton-Gillingham training and other school-directed learning opportunities.Contribute to the broader school community by supporting school initiatives and performing additional duties as needed to advance the Academy’s mission, vision, and values.EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTSValid Florida Department of Education teaching certification.Earned bachelor’s degree in education, or related field.Level 2 fingerprinting clearance and background check in the Clearinghouse system.A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with K-12 students in a teaching capacity.Desire to work with students in a private school learning environment.Professional dress and demeanor.PHYSICAL DEMANDSA major part of the job is performed while sitting, although the work does require regular standing and walking; talking and hearing, both in person and by telephone; use of hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard classroom equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.Near visual acuity is necessary for reading computer screens and reading printed materials.Ability to listen carefully to others while on the phone or in person.WORKING CONDITIONSWork environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
