Summary / Objectives
The Universal Banker serves as a full-service, single‑point of contact in the branch for South State customers’ financial needs. Operating in dual capacity as a teller and a field service representative (FSR), the role focuses on exceptional customer service, transaction processing, and account management, while contributing to the bank’s financial growth.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities- Serve customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to South State Bank Service Standards.
- Know and understand the bank’s products and services, including facts, features, benefits, rules, regulations, and pricing.
- Identify customer needs and expectations, and seek opportunities to expand relationships through referrals.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance in accordance with bank policy.
- Ensure compliance with banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develop a strong understanding of customer‑facing technology and enroll customers in self‑service options.
- Process transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
- Maintain a neat and orderly work area.
- Assist in training new tellers as needed.
- Allow customers access to safe‑deposit boxes.
- Cash checks and process savings withdrawals within assigned limits and prescribed procedures.
- Sell certified checks.
- Balance transactions daily and service/balance the ATM.
- Utilize the branch capture system.
- Follow policies and procedures to minimize operational errors and maintain workflow.
- Adhere to branch security and audit procedures and understand security devices.
- Open new deposit accounts and provide understanding of the bank’s products and financial services.
- Handle other services such as stop payments, wire transfers, and other maintenance functions within assigned limits.
- Explain policies and procedures clearly, noting most customers’ unfamiliarity with them.
- Resolve customer problems and complaints courteously, using such issues as opportunities to satisfy customers and promote additional services.
- Direct customers with difficult problems to alternate resources as needed.
- Show sincere appreciation for each customer’s time and business, offering business cards when appropriate.
- Ensure branch records, reports, and correspondence from customer development efforts are correct, timely, and properly distributed.
- One year of teller or cash handling experience and six months of customer‑relationship building or sales experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in TellerII and basic FSR job functions.
- Additional responsibilities may include vault or back‑up vault duties.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Cash handling, sales, and customer service experience; prior banking experience preferred.
- Good interpersonal and computer skills.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Must be able to lift up to 50pounds and stand or sit for long periods. Must access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations, and identify customers.
Work EnvironmentThe position is likely in an open lobby area with an individual workstation, located inside a climate-controlled facility.
