Departmental Laboratory Technician
OverviewThe Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering at Florida Polytechnic University is seeking applicants for a Departmental Laboratory Technician. This position is available to be filled immediately. The Department will offer a new Biomedical Sciences degree starting in the fall of 2026, and this hiring position supports the new program.
Responsibilities- Conducting safety support for employees and students.
- Preparing and setting up weekly laboratory experiments.
- Facilitating in‑class demonstrations as necessary.
- Maintaining laboratory inventories for chemistry and biology, including documenting hazardous waste use and waste disposal.
- Supporting outreach activities in both biology and chemistry.
- Excellent communication skills.
- The ability to train faculty and students in the use of personal protective equipment and other safety best practices.
- The ability to conduct thorough safety audits.
- Familiarity with chemical inventory management systems.
- B.S. in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field, where the degree is completed before the candidate’s starting date.
- Experience in a laboratory environment.
- In lieu of a degree, any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
- Prior experience in a scientific laboratory setting.
- Excellent computer and laboratory skills.
- Knowledge of chemical hygiene plans, biohazard safety, and waste disposal.
- Experience working in a teaching laboratory setting.
- Proficiency with a variety of instrumentation.
- Experience with electronics laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of current OSHA and EPA regulations.
- This position requires a background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute 435.04.
- This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.
Target hiring salary: $23.22/hr – $24.52/hr (48,300 – 51,000).
Physical Requirements- The position may require carrying electronic equipment and moving lab equipment to organize or set up new labs.
- Must lift over 50 lbs.
Full‑time / On‑site.
