Utility Worker Position
This is an entry-level position for high school graduates who have successfully completed the required industry certification at the Lakeland Electric Power/Energy Academies or Traviss Electricity Program. Positions will be allocated in the utility to prepare future workers where an identified need exists and skills and student goals match. Work is evaluated for overall effectiveness and adherence to safe workplace practices.
The individual chosen for this position will be considered to transition into the Full Time Utility Worker position in this department.
Essential functions include performing basic level skills as required in the designated position, participating in skills training as appropriate, reading blueprints and diagrams for electrical distribution systems, aiding in constructing and maintaining transformers, breakers, and related substation equipment, aiding in digging foundations and trenches and installing forms, reading gauges and instruments and logging the information in records. The position is designated as Mission Critical by the Department Director.
Additional responsibilities may include sweeping floors, using hand tools, mowing lawns, organizing inventory, filing, answering phones, performing housekeeping duties, and performing other entry-level functions.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, graduation from Lakeland Electric Power/Energy Academies or Traviss Technical College Electricity Program with required industry certification, a recommendation from the Lakeland Electric Academies Instructor, Traviss Electricity Program Instructor, or Lakeland Electric Job Shadowing Program Mentor, and to obtain a full-time Utility Worker position, serving six (6) months as a part-time Utility Worker or having six (6) months of experience as an intern or apprentice in the electrical industry.
A résumé is required in order to be considered for this position. Special requirements include a valid Florida driver's license preferred, obtaining a CDL license within a designated time period for certain positions, maintaining a valid contact phone number, and attending meetings at locations other than the primary work location.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of the utility industry, ability to build successful working relationships, ability to follow complex instructions, ability to learn utility-specific skills, ability to perform physically demanding work, ability to use hand tools or office equipment, ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships, skill in communicating effectively, and working environment/conditions including walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, or raising objects, working at heights greater than forty (40) feet, exposure to environmental hazards, and normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
