Construction Superintendent

Signal Hill Builders is a growing commercial general contractor built around a simple philosophy: do what you say you're going to do, take care of the client, and build projects the right way.

We specialize in fast-paced commercial construction, including retail, restaurant, tenant improvement, renovation, and ground-up projects throughout Southern California and across multiple states. We have built our company around strong relationships, accountability, and giving our people the opportunity to take ownership of their work. We keep our structure lean, communication direct, and decision-making fast. Our Superintendents are a critical part of that approach and are trusted to lead their projects in the field.

We are looking for an experienced Construction Superintendent who takes pride in their jobsites, understands how to drive a schedule, communicates well with clients and subcontractors, and knows how to get a project across the finish line.

The Role

The Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day field leadership of assigned construction projects from mobilization through final turnover. You will work closely with the Project Manager while taking primary ownership of field operations, subcontractor coordination, schedule execution, safety, quality control, inspections, and overall jobsite organization.

Our Superintendents are expected to be proactive. We want someone who identifies issues before they become problems, understands the drawings, holds subcontractors accountable, and keeps the project team informed. You should be comfortable working independently while knowing when to pull in the Project Manager and other members of the team.

What You'll Be Responsible For
  • Lead and manage all daily jobsite operations from project startup through completion.
  • Coordinate and supervise subcontractors, vendors, laborers, and field personnel.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and professional jobsite.
  • Take ownership of the project schedule and actively drive subcontractors to meet required milestones.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed two-week look-ahead schedules.
  • Plan manpower, deliveries, inspections, shutdowns, material lead times, and upcoming activities.
  • Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work, RFIs, submittals, and project requirements before work is installed.
  • Identify field conflicts early and work with the Project Manager, design team, and subcontractors to develop practical solutions.
  • Verify subcontractor work is being installed in accordance with the plans, specifications, approved submittals, and Signal Hill Builders' quality standards.
  • Coordinate required inspections with local jurisdictions and other authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Conduct subcontractor coordination and field meetings as required.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, jobsite photographs, manpower counts, and project documentation in Procore.
  • Communicate schedule impacts, field conditions, potential change-order work, and project risks to the Project Manager as soon as they are identified.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with clients, landlords, property managers, inspectors, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Coordinate work in occupied spaces while minimizing disruption to existing operations.
  • Maintain and drive project punch lists through completion.
  • Coordinate final inspections, turnover, closeout, and warranty-related field items with the Project Manager.
  • Represent Signal Hill Builders professionally on the jobsite and take ownership of the overall client experience.
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience as a Commercial Construction Superintendent.
  • Retail, restaurant, tenant improvement, renovation, or other fast-paced commercial construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to independently manage commercial construction projects from mobilization through turnover.
  • Strong understanding of commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and subcontractor coordination.
  • Ability to read and understand architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection drawings.
  • Experience managing projects in occupied or operational environments is preferred.
