Under general supervision of the Director of Public Safety, or designee, administers the activities of the Community Education and Engagement Division of the Public Safety Department to include plans, coordinates and executes public safety programs, which include: crime prevention, community outreach and engagement, school safety and youth prevention/intervention programs, and special events; and performs related work as required.
Responsibilities- Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates high profile and large-scale public safety programs and events.
- Conducts community outreach to businesses and community organizations for delivery of crime prevention and community enhancement programs.
- Conducts surveys, data collection and other necessary research related to public safety programs.
- Works with Sheriff’s Department personnel to research and gather data and analysis on crime statistics and prepares reports regarding trends to identify program needs.
- Prepares and maintains informational documents and reports on neighborhood outreach activities, progress, and results.
- Prepares and presents oral presentations before special interest and citizen groups to disseminate information, answer questions, and generate support for public safety programs.
- Assists in developing and monitoring programs and special event budgets.
- Solicits and administers participation in crime prevention programs, which include the coordination of meetings, events and other activities and any necessary related administrative functions.
- Assists in the marketing of public safety programs and activities.
- Coordinates participation and necessary assistance from other city departments, partner agencies, schools and community organizations.
- Plans, organizes, prepares, and manages public information, including social media content, and special awareness projects and events to promote public safety programs.
- Supervises, schedules, directs, evaluates and plans work assignments for subordinate public safety staff.
- Keeps informed and updates the Director of Public Safety, or designee, on current trends in crime prevention.
- May work outside of a normal work schedule to include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Any combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, is qualifying. A typical example would be at least two-years of college coursework from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, public administration, special event management, or related field working toward earning a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience administering neighborhood/community programs or events that include substantial public contact and public presentations.
Experience in nonsworn public safety/law enforcement administrative or technical support is desirable.
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.
KnowledgeMunicipal government organization and functions, including the implementation of program and event planning; principles of effective oral communication; public relations principles and practices; basic knowledge of program budgeting and expenditure control; principles and techniques of effective report writing; safety principles and practices; principles and practices of supervision and training; marketing and promotion of activities; general office procedures;
Windows-based word processing, spreadsheet and database software (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel); and working knowledge of current best practices of social media.
Plan, organize, implement and evaluate public safety programs; assist in managing a program and special event budgets; write fluently and effectively; communicate logically and cogently; train, meet and communicate effectively with community members and residents of diverse backgrounds; supervise and train subordinate staff; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with peers, officials and members of the general public contacted in the course of work;
effectively manage multiple priorities; use personal computers, learn and use the City’s software programs necessary to perform the job.
Ability to read, write, type, operate office tools and equipment such as a computer, calculator, copier, pencils and pens; ability to drive city vehicles; be at work daily, communicate orally in writing and over the phone; ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds; stand walk and sit for extended periods of time; and the ability to see and hear within normal ranges.
