The Field Engineer (FE) works directly for the Superintendent and provides front-line field management support. The FE exercises judgment and discretion in recommending and implementing policies and procedures and handles a wide variety of field matters. The position is normally preparatory to becoming an Office Engineer or Project Engineer. The FE is responsible for the majority of field layout, supervision of trade workers and subcontractor employees, lift drawings, safety, and quality control.

While most work is in the field, some duties may require time in the field office. This is a safety sensitive position.

Overview

The FE supports the Superintendent in proactive field management and execution of project goals.

Position Qualifications
  • A 4-year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture, Construction Management or related field.
  • 1 year of experience and/or a combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Computer software – Microsoft Office Suite (Excel-based templates), Project Sight, Primavera and Auto Desk Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Past internships in the construction industry are preferred but not required.
  • Project layout (surveying) in conformance with design and contract documents.
  • Check concrete forms for accuracy and adequacy of construction, including embedded items, before placement of concrete.
  • Produce production trend analyses for quantities of work in place and report for weekly and monthly schedule and cost control.
  • Assist with quality control, site safety initiatives and coordination of trade partners as delegated by the project superintendent. May include directing a small work force to gain supervisory experience.
  • Coordinate material deliveries by checking requirements in advance and comparing with delivery status. Inspect materials delivered for quantity, quality and condition and report missing or damaged items.
  • Assist foremen and trade partners with interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Oversee trade partners as assigned and direct work forces to gain supervisory experience.
  • Participate in jobsite safety meetings and weekly safety audits.
  • Collaborate with the VDC team on scope of work, execution plans, and deliverables related to field operations. Review and navigate current 3D model viewing and scheduling software.
Physical Work Classification & Demands

Moderate work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • The role may involve walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and typing. Frequency varies by workflow.
  • Occasional walking within the office to access file cabinets and equipment.
  • Constant use of computers and office equipment.
  • Frequent communication with employees and external stakeholders regarding office administration.
  • Regular computing, analyzing, and conceptualizing mathematical calculations and formulas.
  • Regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
  • Reads blueprints and takes/verifies field measurements.
  • Climbing: ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps at various heights.
  • Balancing, stooping, and other mobility requirements as needed.
  • Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified.
  • Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures; frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements.
