JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Special Education Paraprofessional supports students with mild to moderate disabilities in accessing instruction, developing academic skills, and achieving goals outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Working under the direction of licensed special education staff, the paraprofessional provides instructional support, assists with accommodations and modifications, reinforces behavioral and social-emotional skills, and promotes student independence in inclusive and specialized learning environments.

REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Completion of coursework related to special education, disability studies, or a related field is preferred.

Colorado Special Education Paraprofessional Certificate or equivalent as required by Colorado state regulations.

Substitute Certification highly preferred

Previous experience working with students with mild to moderate disabilities in educational or youth-serving settings is preferred.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.

Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), accommodations, modifications, and special education practices.

Ability to support students with academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.

Patience, empathy, and the ability to encourage student independence and self-advocacy.

Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, specialists, and support staff.

Familiarity with instructional technology and educational software.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

KEY FUNCTIONS, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

• Provide instructional support to students with mild to moderate disabilities in individual, small-group, and classroom settings.
• Assist special education teachers in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), accommodations, modifications, and intervention plans.
• Reinforce academic concepts and classroom instruction under the direction of licensed staff.
• Support students in developing organizational, study, social-emotional, and self-advocacy skills.
• Assist in monitoring student progress and documenting observations related to academic and behavioral goals.
• Implement behavior support strategies and classroom management techniques as directed by the supervising teacher.
• Promote student engagement, independence, and participation in classroom activities.
• Prepare, organize, and adapt instructional materials to meet student learning needs.
• Support inclusion opportunities by assisting students in general education settings as appropriate.
• Utilize instructional technology and assistive tools to support student learning.
• Maintain effective communication with teachers, service providers, and administrators regarding student progress and needs.
• Assist with supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional activities as assigned.

• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with Colorado's special education standards and best practices.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The role may involve providing specialized care, including potential diaper changing and assistance with feeding tubes.

Work Environment
:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work primarily in offices, hallways, gyms, classrooms, bathrooms, shops, playgrounds, cafeterias, portable buildings and pool environments.
