Summary
The Senior NIOGEMS Map Technician provides essential technical leadership and GIS expertise to support the Division of Energy and Mineral Development (DEMD) in managing tribal energy and mineral trust assets. This role is responsible for the compilation, input, and editing of GIS data to develop specialized maps for the National Indian Oil and Gas Evaluation and Management System (NIOGEMS), ensuring that map designs meet documented client requirements and that critical databases are accurately maintained.
Designated as a senior leadership position.
- Compile, input, and edit GIS data for the development of specialized energy/mineral related maps for NIOGEMS.
- Compile, input, and edit GIS data for other specialized energy/mineral related maps in support of other DEMD project requirements.
- Work with the client to define and document requirements for the various data used on the constructed maps and map designs.
- Cataloging of map documents.
- Provide data input and maintenance for NIOGEMS and other DEMD databases as required.
- Provide digital or hard copy requests for GIS data as directed.
- Support the NIOGEMS team with GIS skills as needed.
- Knowledge and use of GIS-related software, particularly ESRI’s ArcGIS.
- Ability to learn other GIS-related software, specifically NIOGEMS.
- Knowledge of various GIS data types.
- Facility with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel, and presentation software.
- Good organizational and oral communication skills.

- B.A./B.S. in Geography or Natural Resources disciplines.
- Three or more years of direct work experience in GIS data gathering, entry, and editing for map development using GIS software.
- Exposure to energy/mineral, natural resources, or engineering data and topics.
This position involves tasking others and accountability requirements but has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work EnvironmentThis job operates in a professional office environment utilizing standard equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Travel25% travel or less is expected for this position.
Physical Demands- Regularly required to talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- Required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
This is a full-time position. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some weekend or evening hours may be necessary in emergency situations.
