Summary
Petroleum Engineer (GS‑0881) located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Lakewood, Colorado.
Major Duties- Provide technical expertise in petroleum engineering for oil, gas, helium, and geothermal energy resources on Indian land.
- Serve as staff Petroleum Engineer for the Division Chief and offer expert advisory, consulting, and review services throughout all phases of energy development.
- Consult with the Division Chief and offer guidance on resolving controversial, unique, and economically significant problems affecting bureau‑wide energy and mineral management objectives.
- Lead technical review, consultation, and coordination of division programs, and provide expert recommendations on complex technical and regulatory challenges.
- Oversee feasibility evaluation of projects, including review of budgets, technical deliverables, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations on exploration, drilling, and production activities for stakeholders and decision‑makers.
- Accurately value energy prospects and determine royalties, rentals, and revenues using engineering and geological principles.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in planning and execution of field examinations, resource assessments, and development projects.
- Must provide transcripts or equivalent documentation to substantiate educational claims.
- For foreign education, a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency is required to demonstrate equivalence to an accredited U.S. program.
- Applicants using foreign transcripts must supply a copy of the transcript and equivalency certificate.
- Qualified Indian candidates under the Indian Reorganization Act will receive preference;
Indian Preference applicants must submit Verification Form BIA‑4432. - Preference may also be given to qualified individuals under certain special hiring authorities.
- Beginning salary corresponds to the pay grade (Step
1). Salary tables can be consulted for the Lakewood, Colorado location. - Potential recruitment and/or relocation bonus, subject to availability of funds and managerial approval.
- Student loan repayment assistance may be offered to eligible candidates upon approval.
- Probationary or trial period may apply, with employment continuation contingent on performance and agency determination.
