The Taxation Division promotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through information, education, assistance and customer service. A Tax Examiner reviews tax returns for accuracy and completeness, ensures the tax return can be processed as filed, resolves errors and contacts taxpayers to obtain any missing information. Furthermore, Tax Examiners can be responsible for analyzing accounting files, issuing refunds or bills, calculating penalty and interest, collecting delinquent taxes, handling taxpayer complaints, adjusting for discrepancies and working with other taxing authorities such as the Internal Revenue Service, local municipalities or agencies in another state.

We're hiring a customer service oriented and analytical minded individual to be our Tax Examiner I in our Discovery unit in the Taxation Division. You will analyze tax assessments and contact taxpayers regarding any issues with their account. Use your attention to detail when reviewing accounts and data systems. Your excellent communication skills will allow better understanding when contacting taxpayers and explaining issues.

Primary Duties:
Taxation Analysis and Processing -
  • Analyze accounts, tax return adjustments, assessments or documentation against Colorado Statutes, regulations, rulings and tax guidelines.
  • Ensure metrics and data are up to date and accurate.
  • Research issues and make corrections.
  • Process, audit and adjust accounts and information in the system.
  • Resolve taxpayer issues and examine new documentation and update systems with changes.
  • Identify fraudulent refund claims based on Discovery criteria.
Customer Support -
  • Educate, troubleshoot and assist customers by answering tax questions and determining the necessary guidance or course of action.
  • Respond to customers via web messaging, emails, letters and phone.
  • De-escalate customers by problem solving and providing appropriate solutions.

This position occasionally reports to the Howard Office for training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Licensure/Certification/

Experience:
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Two (2) years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position
