Position: Registered Nurse I, RN I - Mount View Youth Services Center

Eligibility

This position is open only to Colorado state residents.

Division Overview

The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non-residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS is responsible for care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates fifteen secure facilities that serve youth between the ages of 10 and 21, who are pre‑adjudicated, sentenced, or committed.

Summary of Position

Delivers health care to detained and committed youth within the nurse’s scope of practice. Primary care is provided by independent practitioners with responsibility for a continuum of care from the initial assessment through development and maintenance of health care including physical, psychiatric and dental maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Duties: Initial nursing assessments, triage of medical requests, review admission medical information, administer nursing care, provide education on routine and emergent medical situations, obtain laboratory and diagnostic procedures, initiate medical treatment plans, complete health appraisals, physical exams and screenings, document encounters in electronic medical records, maintain HIPAA confidentiality, initiate referrals, respond to emergent situations (Code Blue, Code Red), deliver medications, and perform other nursing duties delegated by physicians or mid‑level providers.
  • Medication and Treatment: Order and prepare medications, maintain Medication Administration Records, monitor for medication errors, educate youth and staff about medications, investigate and document refusal of medication, maintain inventory logs, and assess vaccine status.
  • Mental Health: Evaluate mental status and mental health and behavioral conditions, perform nursing assessment, provide basic mental health intervention, refer to psychiatrists or mental health resources, involve parents and legal guardians, and conduct mental health referrals.

    Education:

    Assess knowledge deficits on health and hygiene topics, provide individual and group education on health promotion, disease prevention, safe sexual practices, injury prevention, and staff education on infection prevention.
  • Other duties as assigned by DYS physicians or mid‑level providers.
Education / Licensure / Certification / Experience
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • No substitutions are allowed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with adolescent health care.
  • Experience with mental health nursing.
  • Experience with correctional nursing.
  • Relatable experience as a current or previous State of Colorado employee.
Highly Desirable Competencies
  • Knowledge of current medications, administration, and their use.
  • Ability to work in collaborative relationships with other professionals to achieve interdisciplinary goals.
  • Ability to assess and coordinate community health care services for clients and families.
  • Strong data collection, record keeping, and interpretation skills.
  • Ability to self‑regulate emotions under stress.
Conditions of Employment
  • Minimum age 21, no felony convictions or history of domestic violence.
  • Certifications and background checks, including CDHS required screenings.
  • State of Colorado residency required at time of application and throughout employment.
  • Valid, non‑restricted Colorado Driver’s License and motor vehicle record check.
  • Shift work and essential services designation.
  • Travel and floating may be required.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials; medicine waste handling.
  • Valid CPR Card and skill maintenance.
  • Completion of DYS Pre‑service Training Academy and mandatory annual training.
  • Completion of the Diana Screening tool.
