KEYWORDS

saltwater intrusion, sea level rise, groundwater, water supply, coastal processes, monitoring, water quality, environmental changes

PURPOSE

This Hydrology Assistant is an Ameri Corps position. Currently, there is no centralized source of data on the location of groundwater wells in coastal parks. Without this information, the NPS does not know the complete status of freshwater resources and their vulnerability to the effects of rising groundwater tables, sea level rise, and saltwater intrusion. This position will impact a number of potential resource evaluation and vulnerability assessment efforts related to groundwater resources to guide management decisions in coastal parks.

Key tasks include identifying and attributing groundwater wells within coastal park units, evaluating high‑risk locations, developing monitoring strategies, and presenting findings to WRD staff.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Core responsibilities include: collecting and validating groundwater well data; populating a centralized spatial database; mapping well locations and demographics; coordinating site visits; testing data collection protocols; and collaborating with primary and secondary supervisors to develop inventory methods. The work will support nationally applicable ground‑water monitoring and vulnerability assessments.

DELIVERABLES

A spatial database with links to a data repository for wells located in ocean and coastal park units of the National Park Service. Deliverables include an inventory of relevant research papers on sea level rise and saltwater intrusion, and a presentation summarizing project results and recommendations.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent; must obtain a high school diploma prior to using the education award if not already completed.
  • Will provide information to establish eligibility and complete required criminal history and security background checks.
  • Available to commit for the entire 52 weeks.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate with a college degree in earth or environmental sciences (hydrology, geology, coastal geomorphology, etc.) possessing strong geospatial/database experience. Proficient in MS Office, ArcGIS Pro, Arc Online, and has strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and in a team.

POSITION SETTING

Office-based with occasional out-of-town travel (up to 4–5 trips, 1 week each) and fieldwork up to 10 hours per day. Field duties may require carrying up to 40 lb of equipment. Vehicle drivers must have a valid driver's license to operate government vehicles.

HOUSING

Park housing is NOT available. The selected candidate will find housing locally (Lakewood or Fort Collins, CO). Approximate rents start at $900/month for a room and $1,200/month for an apartment.
