Overview
The Buena Vista Correctional Complex consists of two facilities:
Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF) and Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC). BVCF opened in 1892 (formerly Colorado State Reformatory) and BVMC opened in 1999. BVCF capacity is 934 inmates (medium custody); BVMC capacity is 300 inmates (minimum custody).

This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will fill vacant positions at the Buena Vista location. Terms of Employment:
Temporary Aides are limited to nine (9) months in a 12-month rolling period. The organization seeks dedicated professionals to support state government, improve public confidence, and redesign service delivery for better efficiency.

Description Of JobThe Correctional Officer I (CO I) temporary position maintains safety and security at CDOC prison facilities statewide. Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision, and Values, communicating professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the public. Positions require cooperation with staff and effective management of a diverse inmate population. Duties include, but are not limited to the following.
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility; monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required).
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles.
- Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment, and alarms; control movement of inmates via daily schedule.
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles; monitor visiting areas.
- Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts; cross-check and maintain movement logs.
- Conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, and vehicle searches).
- Inspect facility and cells for health, safety, and sanitation; inspect inmate mail and property.
- Respond to emergencies using established protocols; manage tool and key control and documentation.
- Attend roll call; document incidents using established reporting practices; communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Positions may require working additional hours/shifts to maintain safety and security; facilities operate 24/7.

High School Diploma or GED.

- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Possess a valid driver’s license; maintain safe driving record per policy.
- Former state employees terminated for disciplinary reasons may be disqualified; extraordinary circumstances apply.
- Successful completion of a background investigation is required; provide official dispositions for charges.
- All offers are contingent on a health screening showing ability to perform essential functions.
- Must successfully complete all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics.
- Physical ability to perform Defensive Tactics tasks (lift arms, take downs, etc.).
- Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and may be exposed on assignment.
- Willing and able to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays; shift schedules post-Basic Training.
- Willing and able to use physical force as trained, including firearms if required; willingness to work in a locked facility with varying conditions.
- Willing to travel and transport inmates in state vehicles; TB screening required on hire.
