This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC)
Posting to fill vacant positions at our Buena Vista location. The Buena Vista Correctional Complex consists of two facilities: the Buena Vista Correctional Facility and the Buena Vista Minimum Center.

- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required)
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
- Monitor visiting areas
- Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts
- Cross-check and maintain movement logs
- Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, and vehicle searches)
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards
- Inspect inmate mail and property
- Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes
- Follow established tool and key control, ensure proper storage and documentation
- Attend roll call
- Document incidents using established reporting practices
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
- Work additional hours and/or shifts as required to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7
- High School Diploma or a GED certificate
- Applicants must acknowledge and agree to the Conditions of Employment within the application process
- Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; H-1B sponsorship is not available
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record
- Have no felony convictions and comply with all related statutory requirements
- Successful background investigation is required; provide written disposition of any charges if applicable
- All job offers are contingent upon a successful health screening by a healthcare professional
- Must successfully complete all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including written and practical exams in Defensive Tactics
- Possess the physical ability to pass Defensive Tactics, including lifting, striking, and executing controlled takedowns
- Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and on assignment
- Must be willing and able to work all shifts, doubles, weekends, holidays, in inclement weather, and in a locked correctional environment
- Must be willing and able to use physical force as trained, including firearm use
- Must be willing and able to travel and/or transport inmates in state vehicles
- Tuberculosis screening is required of all new employees

- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to inspire teamwork
- Excellent customer service and attention to detail
- Ability to read and comprehend the English language; communicate fluently in English verbally and in writing

- Ability to visually observe and monitor inmate whereabouts and maintain accurate counts
