Position: Variable Bus Driver
.
* Maintains a valid Regular or Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as required by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT), the State of Colorado and the City of Lakewood.
* Maintains valid
* DOT Physical
* or a
* Fit for Duty Physical*.
* Complies with all federal, state, and local rules, statutes, ordinances and codes, including vehicle inspections, licensing, observing traffic signals and speed limits, and requirements for seat belts, snow tires and tire chains.
* Complies with US Department of Transportation and City of Lakewood drug-free workplace regulations, including random testing.
* Complies with OSHA regulations specific to occupational exposure to blood and other potentially hazardous materials, including the clean up and disposal of human body fluids.
* Complies with OSHA regulations specific to appropriate footwear.
* Uses safe driving practices, including defensive driving techniques, through city traffic, highly congested areas, expressways/highways, residential side streets, and in severe weather conditions.
* Adheres to City policies and procedures relative to handling emergency situations; uses approved standards for bus evacuations.
* Reports immediately to the supervisor all incidents of accident, illnesses, injuries and other emergencies.
* Keeps accurate records of passengers, trips by purpose, vehicle mileage, fuel and oil consumption, and work hours.
* Assists riders with boarding and leaving vehicles, doors, stairs, curbs, ramps, ice and snow, seat belts, child safety seats, wheelchair lifts and wheelchair securement systems.
* Performs duties appropriately to reduce riders’ fears and concerns about transportation.
* Per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Part 396, ensures that vehicles are in a safe operating condition by conducting pre- and post-trip inspections and routine maintenance including under-the-hood fluid checks, tire pressure, fueling systems, visibility, and appearance of vehicle (exterior and interior).
* Reports a malfunction immediately to the on-duty dispatcher and takes vehicle to Lakewood Fleet Maintenance Division for repairs and preventive maintenance as directed.
* Arrives at place of disembarkation such as the Clements Community Center at an appropriate time to allow pre-trip inspections, review trip maps, directions and participant trip roster, load equipment, and account for participants prior to leaving on trip.
* Prior to leaving on trip, determines if weather conditions are appropriate to ensure safe driving to destination.
* Informs program coordinator and immediate supervisor if trip should be cancelled due to inclement weather.
* Requires regular and prompt attendance.
* Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.
* When possible and as needed, maintains radio communications with the Transportation Dispatcher. Carry cell phone if provided by program coordinator. Must keep phone turned on from departure point until return to departure point. Keeps volume on phone to highest level. Stays in contact with program’s on call/ back-up staff person as outlined by program requirements.
* Assists activity leader/escort with loading and unloading equipment, as appropriate.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
* Minimum two years’ experience driving para-transit buses, and/or larger 22+ passenger buses with air brakes.
* Experience with mountain driving during all types of weather preferred.
* Experience working with children and youth, older adults, and people who have disabilities.
* Experience operating wheelchair lifts and securement systems, including child restraint systems, within established safety practices and guidelines.
* Experience with positive customer service.
* Must have current, valid Colorado Regular License, or Commercial Driver’s License Class –B with P2 endorsement.
* Must possess a three-year Motor Vehicle Record free of moving violations.
