Job Description

Position Overview: Substitute positions are on‑call, at‑will positions with no guarantee of hours or work.

Compensation: $23.67 per hour (or $26.30 per hour for retirees).

Responsibilities:

  • Implementation of the early childhood or preschool educational program.
  • Implements the daily classroom program as assigned, including music, meals, group projects, free‑time and supervision of students.
  • Prepares and organizes the physical classroom space and classroom materials in accordance with the planned educational program.
  • Interacts positively with all children to support their individual learning and emotional needs.
  • Prepares and serves snacks and meals to the children; eats with the children.
  • Assists with record‑keeping on individual children and families as directed; completes written observations and participates in development and implementation of individualized student plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and relate positively to students, parents, staff and volunteers in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to adjust to varied situations, demands, and new instructional concepts.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment such as photocopier, fax, personal computer, telephone, etc.
  • Ability to attend occasional evening meetings and visit parents in their homes.
  • Ability to supervise students on scheduled field trips.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or recognized equivalent (GED).
  • For long‑term assignments: 72 quarter credits earned at an institution of higher education; or an associate’s degree or higher; or a passing score on a state or local assessment; and at least six months experience working with children or young adults.
  • Documentation of Portable Background Check through the Department of Children, Youth and Families prior to hire.
  • Compliance with state and federal background check requirements.

Desirable

Qualifications:

  • Post‑high‑school courses in early childhood education.
  • Proficient in keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet software, internet navigation, and email applications.
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices for children aged three to five.
  • First aid and CPR certification for employee’s assigned to the health room and transportation.
  • Access to a personal vehicle and proof of insurance.

Insurance Benefits: Eligible for medical, dental, vision, long‑term disability, and basic life insurance if anticipated to work 630 hours during the school year (September 1 through August 31).

Retirement: Participation in Washington State Department of Retirement Systems Plan; tax‑deferred 403(b) and 457 Deferred Compensation Plans available.
