The starting salary range for this position is $67,704.00 to $80,496.00, with most candidates starting at $67,704.00. This is a full-time, permanent, classified, overtime-eligible position with the Pierce College District. The main work location is the Fort Steilacoom campus and this position works a compressed schedule with standard work hours between 8:30am and 7:30pm, Monday through Thursday. This position reports directly to the Director of Child Development & Family Advocacy and requires regular and consistent attendance.
This position is not eligible for telework.

The Lab School Mentor Teacher (Early Childhood Program Specialist
4) position will oversee the Lab School Child Development Classroom at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, providing an equitable and inclusive learning ecosystem that serves a diverse community and serves the needs of children ages 2.5 to 8 years enrolled in the Center as well as overseeing the work of the ECE 2 Classroom Teacher. For all student employees, the mentor teacher would be responsible for full-scope supervision including but not limited to creating schedules, acting upon leave requests, evaluating performance, and recommending corrective or disciplinary action.
The Lab School Mentor Teacher is responsible for ensuring compliance and implementation of all health and safety regulations of the college and state licensing requirements and grant requirements, such as Head Start/Early Head Start. The mentor teacher maintains a collaborative and constructive partnership with the faculty working in the Lab School of the College's ECE program, and reports to the Director of CDCs & Family Advocacy.
The mentor teacher serves as a mentor to student teachers in the ECE department as well as other classroom staff.
Required
Education:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with 15+ quarter credits or 10+ semester credits in Early Childhood Education, Human Development, or related fields OR equivalent professional experience in Early Childhood Education, Human Development, or related fields. For a Bachelor's degree, the equivalent amount of professional experience is 4 years.
Associates Degree = 2 years | Bachelors Degree = 4 years | Masters Degree = 5 years
Required Experience:
- 1 year experience working with adults in the role of coach and mentor.
- 3 years' experience with children of 1-5 years old enrolled in a group setting to include program planning, developing and presenting educational activities and/or lesson plans.
Special Requirements:
- In accordance with licensing, individuals are required to have successfully completed a portable background check through the DCYF MERIT system and provide Pierce College with the results at the time of hire.
- The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background check after a conditional offer of employment.
- Written proof of Tuberculin (TB) testing prior to starting work.
- Written proof of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine prior to starting work.
- Valid Food Handlers Permit upon employment.
- Valid First Aid and CPR Card upon employment
- Completion of HIV/AIDS training upon employment.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s license and reliable transportation
