Position: Biological Science Technician (Seasonal).

Duties

Temporary appointment for seasonal work less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. The position will be terminated upon completion of the season's work. The agency may rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years if they work less than 6 months or 1040 hours that year.

  • Uses a variety of laboratory equipment to perform standardized genetics tasks.
  • Assists with DNA isolation, extraction, amplification (PCR), and next‑generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Collects, compiles, and summarizes data with adherence to established QA/QC laboratory procedures, and submits genetic data to public repositories.
  • Conforms to laboratory protocols and follows the established chain of custody for sample processing and storage.
  • Performs general laboratory equipment maintenance and assists with laboratory cleaning and decontamination.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Suitability for employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Individuals assigned male at birth after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 07/06/2026 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification.

Minimum Qualification [GS‑6]
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑05 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: assisting with collecting, handling, or processing biological samples, including those used in DNA or eDNA based analyses; using basic scientific or laboratory equipment following established procedures; recording, organizing, or entering biological data accurately; following written protocols, safety guidelines, and quality control procedures;

    assisting staff with routine tasks, maintaining supplies, or preparing simple reports.

Experience includes paid and unpaid experience, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, will be credited.

Education

This position does not have an educational substitute in lieu of experience and/or a combination.

Telework

The position is suitable for telework only during emergency disaster situations.

Temporary Benefits

Most Federal employees earn annual and sick leave. Temporary employees on a full‑time or part‑time appointment expected to last at least 90 days, or on an intermittent schedule expected to work 130 hours per month for at least 90 days, may be eligible for health benefits through the Federal Employees Health Benefits program. Employees electing to participate will be responsible for the employee share of the premium.

After separation, employees may be offered continuation of coverage under the Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) option.
