Job Duties
Receives and transmits radio communications, dispatching patrol officers and equipment for law enforcement, traffic control, accident investigation, motorist assistance, and security. Operates the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) terminal, receiving and transmitting messages; interprets messages and routes information to the appropriate person. Maintains radio log and message control log; prepares and types reports and correspondence; maintains proper files for correspondence, reports, and teletypes.
Receives and records all telephone calls; responds to situations reported as warranted; provides required information and/or directions. Greets and assists visitors to the patrol facility; provides liaison service to area communities and other public service agencies. Performs other related duties as required.
High school diploma or GED equivalent; reading, writing, and speaking English; 1 course or 3 months’ experience in typing, operating a personal computer, and word processing. Alternatively, equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Agency‑Preferred QualificationsPossess training or experience in dispatching; knowledge of law enforcement procedures; 6 months’ experience in public relations; 12 months’ experience in operation of computer. Bi‑lingual or multi‑lingual abilities (fluently speak and write a language(s) in addition to English).
Training & Development RequirementsMust successfully obtain LEADS and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) certification before completion of the probationary period; must re‑certify in LEADS every two years as mandated by Ohio Administrative Code 4501: 2‑10‑03 (G) (3); may be permitted to ride with line troopers with approval of supervisor per OSTA Unit #1 agreement.
Unusual Working ConditionsWorks weekends with rotating days off; confined to work area sitting for long periods at a personal computer terminal; constant noise from telephone ringing and radio traffic; exposed to stressful working conditions involving performance of multiple, critical tasks simultaneously to ensure safety and welfare of highway patrol units and the public.
