Overview

The Be A Mentor Program pairs caring adult volunteers from the community with youth in one-to-one relationships. Mentors give of their time to be a friend, answer questions, and provide guidance. Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and volunteer their personal time to be a caring friend to a youth. They serve as a role model, advocate, and resource.

The purpose of the mentoring relationship is to help youth develop their full potential, both in and outside of the classroom.

Responsibilities
  • Spend time with your mentee in person, exploring, talking, and learning about them.
  • Engage in activities such as playing basketball, helping with homework, or trying new foods.
  • Follow no set curriculum, with access to activities to use if you get stuck, while enjoying freedom to pursue interests together.
  • Commit to approximately 1 hour per week for a full year.
  • Serve as a caring friend, role model, and resource for a youth.
Qualifications
  • Caring adults 21 or over who have reliable access to a car
  • Empathetic, a good listener, and committed to making a difference in a young person’s life
  • Willing to share lessons from life experiences as appropriate
  • Commitment of 1 hour per week for a full year
  • All mentors are required to complete a background check and training
Support and Commitment

Our mentoring coordinator will be available for support throughout the program (from beginning to end).

Impact and Environment

Many of the youth we serve have never had an adult really listen and care for them until they get a mentor. Often, they feel the world is against them. We believe in the potential of every child, and mentoring as a tool to help youth succeed. Mentoring can make a HUGE difference in a kid’s life.
